Essien lifts ODU over Texas State

Norfolk State, VWU also post victories

Imo Essien sank a running shot in the lane at the buzzer Saturday afternoon, giving Old Dominion a thrilling 70-68 victory over Texas State in San Marcos.

ODU (16-10, 8-6 Sun Belt) has won three consecutiv­e games, including the first two of a three-game trip. Texas State fell to 12-15, 5-9.

Elon 66, William & Mary 55:

Max Mackinnon scored 22 points, Sean Halloran 18 and Sam Sherry 14 as the Phoenix (6-20, 4-9) extended the losing streak of the Tribe (9-17, 4-9) to four games.

Chase Lowe scored 13, Miguel Ayesa 12 and Ben Wight 11 for W&M. The Tribe hit just 35.1% from the field (20 of 57) and dropped to 1-12 on the road.

College of Charleston 83, Hampton 70:

Despite Jordan Nesbitt’s 20 points, the Pirates (6-20, 3-10) dropped alone into last place in the CAA with a home loss to the Cougars (24-3, 12-2), who have won three consecutiv­e games. Pat Robinson III scored 30 points for Charleston.

Norfolk State 76, Maryland Eastern Shore 73:

Joe Bryant Jr. poured in 25 points for the Spartans (17-7, 6-2 MEAC) in Princess Anne, Maryland, as they ended UMES’ winning streak at seven games. Bryant’s jumper at the 2:36 mark gave NSU the lead to stay, 65-63.

Da’Shawn Phillip led the Hawks (14-9, 6-2) with 20 points, but Donchevell Nugent’s try to tie from 3-point range missed in the final seconds.

Virginia Wesleyan Shenandoah 60:

The host Marlins (15-7, 7-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) completed a two-game season sweep of the Hornets (6-17, 3-11), who have lost four in a row.

Amarion Wilson scored 22 points, Khai Seargeant had 14 and Omari DeVeaux and Jordan Crump each netted 10 for VWU.

Richard Rogers scored 12 for Shenandoah, hitting 4 of 7 3-point tries.

Christophe­r Newport 85, Salisbury 73:

Ty Henderson had 17 points and six assists as the Captains (21-3), ranked third by d3hoops.com, beat the Sea Gulls in Maryland to raise their winning streak to six games.

Matthew Brodie (13), Jahn Hines (13), Trey Barber (12) and Caleb Furr (11) also scored in double digits for CNU. Brandon Craig had 19 points for Salisbury (11-13), which also lost to CNU 84-74 on Jan. 28 in Newport News.

George Mason 75, Rhode Island 67:

Josh Oduro had 27 points and six rebounds and Davonte “Ticket” Gaines had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Patriots (14-12, 6-7 Atlantic 10) as they beat the Rams in Fairfax. Jalen Carey finished with 21 points and eight rebounds for URI (8-16, 4-8), which has three straight games.

James Madison 73, Coastal Carolina 66: Terrence Edwards scored 16 points as the Dukes (18-9, 9-5 Sun Belt) completed a two-game season sweep of the Chanticlee­rs (10-16, 4-10) by rallying in Conway, South Carolina. CCU has lost seven games in a row.

Apprentice 98, Maine Fort Kent 72:

Karree Smith and Jayden Eason scored 16 points apiece as the Builders (16-7), who already had won the New South Athletic Conference regular season, won a home non-league game in Newport News.

Richmond 74, Loyola Chicago 71:

Tyler Burton had 23 points in Richmond’s home win. Andre Gustavson scored 15 points for the Spiders (13-13, 6-7 Atlantic 10) while finishing 7 of 11 from the floor and added five rebounds. Ben Schwieger led the Ramblers (8-16, 2-10) with 17 points and four assists.

East Carolina at Tulane, postponed:

East Carolina (12-12, 3-8) didn’t play its game at Tulane (16-7, 9-3) after the death of Pirates radio announcer Jeff Charles while with the team Friday in New Orleans. In a statement Friday, East Carolina said any rescheduli­ng decision was yet to be determined. Tulane listed the American Athletic Conference game as postponed on its schedule as of Friday night.
