ODU extends win streak to five

Monarchs remain tied for second in Sun Belt

Kaye Clark collected 12 points and six assists and Amari Young added a season-high 15 rebounds along with nine points as Old Dominion held off Georgia State 60-54 in a Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Chartway Arena.

The Monarchs (18-9, 10-4) won their fifth straight and 12th in 14 games to remain in a second-place tie in the conference.

ODU improved to 12-1 at home this season by outrebound­ing Georgia State 39-32 and limiting the Panthers to 37.3% shooting from the field. The Monarchs shot 43.6%.

Mikyla Tolivert scored 19 points to pace Georgia State (10-17, 4-10), which has dropped four straight.

Norfolk State 53, Maryland Eastern Shore 51:

Kierra Wheeler scored 13 points and Makoye Diawara converted a crucial three-point play to guide the Spartans (18-5, 6-2 MEAC) past the Hawks (5-16, 1-6) in Princess Anne, Maryland.

Mahoganie Williams’ jumper with 7:19 left put NSU ahead 37-35, and the Spartans remained in front. Wheeler’s basket with 28 seconds left put Norfolk State ahead 50-47, but Zamara Haynes hit two free throws at the 20-second mark for the last of her 15 points, making it 50-49.

Diawara scored while drawing a foul from Mahogany Lester and sank a free throw with 14 seconds to go, giving the Spartans a 53-49 advantage. Lainey Allen scored for UMES with four seconds left, but NSU ran out the clock.

Roanoke 69, Virginia Wesleyan 44:

The host Maroons (17-6, 11-5) got 21 points and eight rebounds from Rose Sande and 16 points and 10 rebounds from Madison Nereu in their ODAC triumph. Roanoke has won six of its last seven.

Adaje Williams had 20 points and five rebounds for VWU (6-17, 2-14).

Christophe­r Newport 69, Salisbury 44:

The Captains (23-0), now the consensus top-ranked team in Division III, added to their unbeaten season by cruising past the host Sea Gulls (7-17).

Katy Rader scored 15 points, Sondra Fan 12 and Hannah Kaloi 11 for CNU. Anaya Simmons had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Apprentice 79, Maine Fort

Kent 74: The host Builders (13-6) won in Newport News behind Jada Bryant’s 22 points and 19 rebounds and Ashawnti Williams’ 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Late Friday

William & Mary 84, Elon 74, OT:

Riley Casey had 30 points and seven assists in North Carolina, helping the Tribe improve to 4-0 in overtime this season.

In an up-and-down game, W&M (13-10, 8-4 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) went the final 2:40 of regulation without a point, and Elon (7-17, 3-10) rallied to force overtime at 69-69. Lenaejha Evans, who led the Phoenix with 23 points, sank the second of two free throws with six seconds left.

In the extra period, trailing 74-72, the Tribe outscored the Phoenix 12-0. Junior Rebekah Frisby-Smith (18) and freshman Kayla Rolph (13) scored career highs, and junior Caitlin Wingertzah­n had a career-high 11 rebounds along with 11 points.

No. 7 Utah 92, Washington 69: Gianna Kneepkens hit five 3-pointers, scored 19 points and added a team-high six assists for the Utes (21-2, 11-2 Pac-12) in Salt Lake City.
