Hokies knock off Pitt, help Cavs

Grant Basile scored 22 points as Virginia Tech did its arch-rival a favor Saturday, defeating Pittsburgh 79-72 at Cassell Coliseum.

The result knocked the Panthers (19-8, 12-4) out of a first-place tie in the ACC with the Virginia Cavaliers and ended Pitt’s six-game winning streak.

Mylyljael Poteat provided 15 points and six rebounds off the bench for Tech (18-11, 6-10). Sean Pedulla, Hunter Cattoor and Justyn Mutts scored 12 points each for the Hokies. Pedulla had six rebounds, five assists and two steals, and Mutts had six rebounds and four assists.

Tech shot 9 of 19 from 3-point range, including 3 of 4 by Cattoor, to Pitt’s 3 of 18.

Jamarius Burton led the Panthers with 15 points, and Nelly Cummings had 11 points and eight assists.

Tech went on an 18-2 binge for a 23-13 lead and was ahead thereafter. The Hokies remained comfortabl­y in front.

No. 15 Miami 96, Wake Forest 87: Isaiah Wong scored 27 points, Nijel Pack finished with 24 and Miami beat Wake Forest.

Norchard Omier had 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting while Jordan Miller added 14 points for the Hurricanes (22-5, 13-4), who won their sixth straight and improved to 15-0 at home.

Tyree Appleby scored 15 points for the Demon Deacons (17-10, 9-7).

Boston College 75, Florida 69: Quinten Post scored 21 points, Devin McGlockton added 16 and Boston College (13-15, 7-10) held off Florida State (8-20, 6-11) in Tallahasse­e after leading by 19 points early in the game.

Post made 7 of 11 shots, including 5 of 5 from 3-point distance, in 25 minutes of play before fouling out.

Caleb Mills scored 27 points for Florida State.

Georgia Tech 79, Florida Tech 56: Lance Terry scored 19 points, Ja’Von Franklin added a double-double and Georgia Tech (11-16) defeated Division II Florida Tech in Atlanta.

Franklin had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
