No. 7 Arizona falls at buzzer

Sun Devils post miraculous upset on Cambridge’s shot

Desmond Cambridge Jr. hit a 60-foot shot at the buzzer and Arizona State rallied from a 10-point deficit to knock off No. 7 Arizona 89-88 Saturday in Tucson.

The Wildcats (24-5, 13-5 Pac-12) built a 10-point lead midway through the second half before going more than six minutes without a field goal as Arizona State pulled ahead by one.

The Sun Devils (20-9, 11-7) went up 86-85 on Warren Washington’s layup with just a minute left, but Pelle Larsson put Arizona back up on a layup with 29 seconds left.

Arizona State’s DJ Horne missed a jumper with four seconds left, and the Sun Devils had a final shot after the Wildcats’ Oumar Ballo hit 1 of 2 free throws.

Catching the ball with 2.4 seconds left, Cambridge left the fans at McKale Center stunned, launching a shot from beyond half-court that sent his teammates charging onto the floor in celebratio­n.

No. 3 Kansas 76, West Virginia 74:

Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 17 points as the host Jayhawks (24-5, 12-4 Big 12) held off the Mountainee­rs to extend their winning streak to six. All five Kansas starters scored in double digits, including Gradey Dick and Kevin McCullar Jr. with 16 apiece.

Erik Stevenson scored 23 and Tre Mitchell 20 for West Virginia (16-13, 5-11), whose last-second bid was denied when Joe Toussaint was called for traveling in the lane.

No. 9 Baylor 81, No. 8 Texas 72:

Jalen Bridges had 17 points for Baylor, which overcame a huge deficit with an impressive run right after freshman standout Keyonte George left injured early, and went on to beat Big 12 co-leader Texas in Waco.

Adam Flagler had 14 points for the Bears (21-8, 10-6 Big 12). Dale Bonner added 13 points, including seven in an quick spurt after halftime, while Flo Thamba had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Dylan Disu had a season-high 24 points for Texas (22-7, 11-5), which twice got even early in the second half but never could regain the lead.

No. 14 Kansas State 73, Oklahoma State 68:

Markquis Nowell had 22 points, eight assists and four steals as the visiting Wildcats (22-7, 10-6 Big 12) gained their third straight victory. Norfolk native Keyontae Johnson added 17 points for the Wildcats, who swept the regular-season series.

Kalib Boone scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half on Senior Day for the Cowboys (16-13, 7-9), who have lost four straight.

No. 18 Connecticu­t 95, St. John’s 86: Jordan Hawkins scored 20 points, Adama Sanogo added 18 points and nine rebounds, and the Huskies won at Madison Square Garden.

Andre Jackson Jr. had 15 points and Joey Calcaterra also scored 15 to lead a strong effort by UConn’s bench, and the resurgent Huskies (22-7, 11-7 Big East) avenged an 11-point home loss to St. John’s last month.

UConn won for the sixth time in seven games, closing in on a first-round bye in the Big East Tournament. AJ Storr had 20 points and Posh Alexander added 18 for the Red Storm (17-13, 7-12), who had won three of four. David Jones scored 15 off the bench — all in the second half.

Villanova 79, No. 19 Creighton

67: Eric Dixon scored 18 of his career-high 31 points in the first half, Cam Whitmore added 17 and the Wildcats (15-14, 9-9 Big East) won in Philadelph­ia. Dixon set a career high with six 3-pointers for Villanova, which has won five of six.

Arthur Kaluma scored 19 points and Ryan Kalkbrenne­r had 18 for Creighton (18-11, 12-6). The Bluejays have lost three of four following an eight-game winning streak.

Oklahoma 61, No. 23 Iowa State 50:

Jacob Groves led Oklahoma (14-15, 4-12 Big 12) with 16 points as the Sooners knocked off the Cyclones (17-11, 8-8) in Ames, Iowa. The Sooners had lost nine of their previous 11 games but erased an early 11-point deficit and seized control with a 17-2 run in the second half.

Iowa State has now lost five of its last six while trying to secure an NCAA Tournament berth. The Cyclones shot just 31% as Gabe Kalscheur led Iowa State with 12 points.

No. 24 TCU 83, Texas Tech 82:

JaKobe Coles made two free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining, and the Horned Frogs (19-10, 8-8 Big 12) held on in Lubbock despite blowing a 12-point lead in the final eight minutes.

De’Vion Harmon had a steal and a layup to put the Red Raiders (16-13, 5-11) in front by one with 12 seconds remaining, but after Coles’ foul shots, Harmon’s desperatio­n 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded wasn’t close. Texas Tech ended a four-game winning streak. Mike Miles Jr. scored 24 points for the Frogs, who had lost five of six.

Mississipp­i State 69, Texas A&M 62: Tolu Smith had 17 points and Shakeel Moore had 14 for the host Bulldogs (19-10, 7-9 SEC) against the Aggies (21-8, 13-3) in Starkville. Cameron Matthews had 11 points for the Bulldogs, who held the Aggies to one field goal in the final 14 minutes and outscored them 34-18 during that span.

Wade Taylor IV led Texas A&M with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and Richmond native Henry Coleman III and Andersson Garcia each had 11.

Iowa 112, Michigan State 106 (OT): Kris Murray scored 26 points, Tony Perkins scored Iowa’s last six points in overtime, and the Hawkeyes staged a remarkable rally to win in Iowa City.

Iowa trailed 91-78 with 1:34 remaining in regulation before catching fire from 3-point distance. The Hawkeyes made 6-of-9 3-pointers in the final minute and a half, including the last four in a row in the final 32 seconds to tie the game. Perkins had two putback baskets and two

free throws as Iowa closed out the win in the final minute-plus of overtime.

In OT, the Hawkeyes relied on the inside game of Murray and Perkins, who combined to score 10 of their 11 points in the extra period.

MILITARY

Colgate 64, Navy 60:

Keegan Records had 25 points and nine rebounds as the Red Raiders (23-8, 17-1), who have dominated the Patriot League, ended a seven-game winning streak by the Midshipmen (18-12, 11-7). Colgate won its sixth game in a row.

For Navy, Patrick Dorsey had 18 points, Daniel Deaver had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Tyler Nelson had 10 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.

Army 80, Holy Cross 65: Chris Mann had 18 points as Army (16-15, 10-8 Patriot) defeated Holy Cross (10-21, 7-11) in Worcester, Massachuse­tts.

Gerrale Gates had 26 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Crusaders.

Late Friday

No. 16 Xavier 82, Seton Hall 60:

Souley Boum scored 23 points, Colby Jones had 19 and the two combined on a decisive run early in the second half in Newark, New Jersey.

Adam Kunkel added 13 points and the Musketeers (21-8, 13-5 Big East) held the Pirates (16-13, 9-9) to 21 first-half points in winning for only the second time in five games.

There was a scuffle in front of the scorer’s table with 1.6 seconds remaining involving Boum and Jaquan Sanders. Both received technical fouls. Pirates forward KC Ndefo, who had fouled out, was ejected after officials reviewed the altercatio­n.

UNLV 54, Air Force 53: EJ Harkless put back an offensive rebound with a second left for the Rebels in Las Vegas.

The Falcons took a 53-50 lead on a pair of Rytis Petraitis free throws with 16 seconds left, but Shane Nowell took a feed from Harkless and dunked to pull the Runnin’ Rebels within one.

Air Force’s Ethan Taylor gave up a steal to Jackie Johnson III, but Keshon Gilbert missed a layup and Harkless snared the rebound.

Harkless had 23 points, added seven rebounds and three steals for the Rebels (17-11, 6-10 Mountain West).

Petraitis led the Falcons (14-16, 5-12) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jake Heidbreder added 16 points and Carter Murphy had 13 points, five steals and two blocks.
