Dr. Elizabeth K. Welsh, 90, of Hampton, VA passed away on March 3, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 11, 1932, to Dr. Harold and Margaret (Smythe) King in Des Moines, IA. Liz, as she was known, moved to Hampton, VA as a young child and ultimately graduated from Newport News High School. Afterwards she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Master of Arts in Elementary Education Reading, a Certificat­e of Advanced Studies in Educationa­l Administra­tion, and a Doctor of Education- all from The College of William and Mary. Liz taught in the Hampton City Schools for 31 years (1969-2000) as a classroom elementary teacher and Reading Specialist. She enjoyed teaching reading to all levels of aptitude, and positively affected many students' lives. Liz was also an active member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Hampton, VA. And she was an avid and accomplish­ed bridge player.

She is predecease­d by her husband of more than fifty years, Dick Welsh, and her brother Alfred N. King. She is survived by her three children (Cathy, Rick, and Beth), her four grandchild­ren (Michael Elgart, Matthew Elgart, Sarah Murphy, and Douglass Welsh), her daughter-in-law (Mary Graham) and her sons-in-law (George Elgart and Michael Murphy).

A visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, VA 22203 on March 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service is scheduled for March 31 at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Church 5300 10th Street North Arlington, VA 22205, followed by an internment at Quantico National Cemetery at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice in the name of Elizabeth K. Welsh.
