Joyce Wilson Chapman

Joyce Wilson Chapman was born July 11, 1934 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She was the seventh of eight children born to Blossie and Carrie Horne.

Joyce graduated as salutatori­an from Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount. She then matriculat­ed to North Carolina Central College (NCCU) earning a Bachelor's Degree in English and Library Science. While there, Joyce became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporat­ed, sang in the college choir and served as a dormitory counselor.

She served as librarian for Newport News Public Schools for 32 years.

Joyce married John Wilson, Jr. February 6, 1960 and to their union was born three children.

After the death of her husband, Joyce married Deacon Timothy Chapman, Sr. and they were married for more than 20 years.

She was a member of St. John Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Bishop Samuel L. Green, Jr. and presently, Elder Samuel L. Green, III.

On March 1, 2023, Joyce went from labor to reward. She was predecease­d by her husbands, John Wilson, Jr., and Timothy Chapman, Sr.; parents, Blossie and Carrie Horne; her siblings, Mavis, Willie, Evelyn, Gladys, Bertha Imogene, James and Margelyn.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Rhonda (Ronald), Becky, John (Carmella); bonus sons, Superinten­dent Larry C. Miles, Sr. (Terraine) and Michael Taylor, Sr. (Lynn); stepchildr­en, Robert, Ronald and Timothy, Jr.; grandchild­ren, Ronald Andre Watson, III (Ranisha), George McCadden, III, Camille Alexandra McCadden and Jadyn Camille Wilson; great granddaugh­ter, Madison Rose Watson; Life-Long Sister-Friend, Delores Spencer; Sisters-in-Love, Anna Wilson, Priscilla B. Wilson, Dr. Barbara W. Farmer, and Mary P. Horne; a host of nieces, nephews, godchildre­n, spiritual daughters and friends.

The homegoing celebratio­n will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Bethel Temple Church, 1705 Todds Lane, Hampton, Virginia 23666. Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2023 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
