Watch Youngkin

Re “As Gov. Glenn Youngkin eyes the White House, here are some of the bills he’s signed” (March 12): After years of former President Donald Trump’s alarming antics, it’s tempting to assume that mild-mannered Gov. Glenn Youngkin is a “compassionate conservative.”

But we must look more closely — not just at a politician’s seemingly affable demeanor, but also at his or her record.

In the article are frightening details for women and girls: In addition to Youngkin’s efforts to roll back Virginia women’s right to choose, “his administration testified against a bill that would have prohibited police from issuing search warrants for digitized data” on apps tracking women’s and girls’ menstrual cycles.

Youngkin’s disturbing education scandals are not mentioned in the article.

His administration shortchanged Virginia’s public schools by $201 million due to an “accounting error” that still has not been fully rectified. Youngkin created a teacher snitch line for tattling on educators who teach diversity, then was accused of not following the state’s Freedom of Information Act. The Youngkin administration was sued over it and reached a settlement with news outlets.

His administration attempted to whitewash Virginia’s K-12 history standards by trying to remove references to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, slavery, etc. Youngkin has attacked an Advanced Placement African American Studies course. His administration has rolled back transgender and LGBTQ student rights.

The media must hold Youngkin accountable for his dangerous record that harms women, minorities and LGTBQ people in Virginia.
