William & Mary again defeats Hofstra

William & Mary held off Hofstra 2-1 Saturday, ensuring a Colonial Athletic Associatio­n series victory in Hempstead, New York. Zach Tsakounis (2-0) pitched four innings, Mike Weidinger three and Rojo Prarie the final two of a combined six-hitter.

RBI singles by Ben Williamson in the third and Tank Yaghoubi in the ninth gave the Tribe (11-9, 3-2 CAA) a 2-0 lead. An error, double and wild pitch enabled Hofstra (5-12, 1-4) to halve the deficit, but Prarie stranded the potential tying run at third with a strikeout and groundout. W&M won 13-1 Friday in the series opener.

ODU romps to a second win in series

Old Dominion (17-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) routed host Louisiana Monroe 13-1 Saturday for the Monarchs’ second straight win in their Sun Belt-opening series. The Warhawks fell to 7-13, 0-2.

Luke Waters was 4 for 6 with two doubles, a triple, four runs and an RBI. Camden Grimes was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, Robbie O’Neal scored three runs and drove in two, and Chris Dengler was 3 for 4 with two runs. Sam Armstrong (4-0) limited ULM to four hits in 5 innings.

Friday, Alex Bouche’s go-ahead single in the 10th inning led ODU to a series-opening 5-3 victory.

Thomas Wheeler’s solo home run in the second inning gave ODU, which leads the conference in 15 hitting categories, a 1-0 lead. ULM scored twice in the fifth to go ahead 2-1, but Hunter Fitz-Gerald smashed his 11th home run of the season in the sixth to force a 2-2 tie.

In the seventh, the Monarchs went ahead 3-2 on Tyler Wheeler’s single. The Warhawks retaliated with Kade Dupont’s RBI single in the eighth.

In the first extra inning, Bouche’s hit and a ULM throwing error gave the Monarchs a two-run margin.

VMI downs NSU

Despite a first-inning grand slam by Jacob Council, Norfolk State lost 11-9 Saturday at VMI as the Keydets (12-8) gained their second victory over the Spartans (3-14) in as many days in Lexington.

Hampton High graduate Trey Morgan was 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI for the Keydets, and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy product Zac Morris was 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Ty Swaim added two hits and two RBIs, and Holden Wilkerson (1-1) pitched four shutout innings to secure the victory.

No. 23 Wolfpack slips past No. 14 Virginia

No. 23 North Carolina State (15-5, 2-4 ACC) scored three runs in the ninth off reliever Jake Berry to avoid a three-game sweep by No. 14 Virginia (17-2, 4-2), defeating the Cavaliers 5-4 in Raleigh.

Trailing 2-1, UVA went ahead 4-2 in the ninth on Jake Gelof ’s two-run homer — his third hit of the day— and Kyle Teel’s solo blast. But the Wolfpack came back with Kalae Harrison’s RBI single and Cannon Peebles’ walkoff two-run single, both up the middle.

Going into the weekend,

Virginia had lost all 13 of its three-game road series at NC State dating back to 1990, but the Cavaliers won the series’ first two games.

Friday, UVA won 7-0 for its second victory in the series, thanks to Brian Edgington’s effective pitching and Teel’s two-run homer.

Reilly’s six RBIs propel No. 16 CNU

Alec Reilly homered, doubled and drove in six runs as Christophe­r Newport (18-6), ranked 16th in Division III, defeated Marymount 14-5 in Arlington. The Saints fell to 9-6.

Josh Reinhold added two hits and two RBIs, and Reilly, Eric Wilson and Jake Benedict scored twice each. Jackson Baird (3-1) pitched five innings for the win.

Cam Nolet struck out eight in seven scoreless innings and Michael Burton Jr. drove in three runs to lead Virginia Wesleyan (3-11-1, 2-0-1 ODAC) to an 11-0 home victory over Eastern Mennonite (4-13, 0-4).

Apprentice (20-5) earned its third victory over Saint Vincent (5-7) in two days at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, rallying for a 3-2 triumph. The teams will conclude the series with a noon game today.

Camden Weston singled to left field to drive in Jett Winslow with the winning run in the ninth. The Builders fell behind the Bearcats of Latrobe, Pennsylvan­ia, 2-0 in the first inning, but run-scoring hits by Nate Yeary in the fifth and Hunter Johnson in the eighth pulled them even. Bryce Post (4-0) pitched three hitless innings for the victory.

Friday, Apprentice won 5-3 and then 6-5.

In Friday’s opener, the Builders went ahead 4-2 with a fourrun fourth inning, featuring Riggs Ellis’ two-run single. Logan Mize got his fourth save of the season.

In Game 2, Jeremy Harmon hit a walk-off, bases-loaded single in the seventh, capping the Builders’ rally from a 6-5 deficit.
