Foss’ goal helps Admirals clinch series

-

Ryan Foss scored 6:12 into overtime as the Norfolk Admirals beat the Trois-Rivières Lions 4-3 Saturday afternoon before 2,794 at Colisée Vidéotron to emerge with two victories in their threegame series in Quebec.

The Admirals have won three of four games overall and five of their past six road contests, their most successful stretch of a season during which they have the ECHL’s worst record (18-41-2-3).

Norfolk went ahead 1:05 into the game on Griffin Lunn’s goal and made it 2-0 just 14 seconds into the middle period when Darren McCormick scored. Nico Blachman gave the Admirals a three-goal lead 6:59 into the second period.

But little has come easily for the Admirals this season. Trois-Rivières (24-36-3-0) made it 3-1 on Ryan Francis’ goal 9:45 into the middle period, and Cedric Montminy’s power-play goals 3:08 and 13:13 into the third period eventually forced overtime.

Admirals goalie Tomas Vomacka, whose tripping penalty led to the power play on which the tying goal was scored, had 28 saves for the victory, including three in OT. Losing goalie Philippe Desrosiers made 32 saves.

On Friday night, the Lions scored three goals in a first-period span of less than nine minutes and went on to shut out the Admirals 5-0.

Lions goalie Joe Vrbetic made sure the lead stood up, making 39 saves and earning the night’s No. 1 star. Vomacka had 27 stops.

The Admirals will play their next five games at Scope to close their home schedule. The first three will comprise a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series against the Newfoundland Growlers.
