Pair of local girls to play at Augusta National
Many golfers dream of going to Georgia to play at Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the Masters. Two local youngsters will live that dream today.
Macie Rasmussen, 13, of Chesapeake, and Ada Inderlied, 11, of Virginia Beach, qualified for the national Drive, Chip &
Putt competition to take place at Augusta National Golf Club, where the Masters will start Thursday. Both say they’d love to be on the LPGA Tour someday.
The competition is for boys and girls from ages 7-15, and it will be shown live on the Golf Channel.
Rasmussen began her path to Augusta’s girls age 12-13 competition via events at Kiln Creek in Newport News and Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian, then advanced through the regional qualifier at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.
The Greenbrier Christian Academy eighth-grader lists Cypress Point in Virginia Beach as her home course. Her father played golf for Virginia Tech and her mom for Longwood.
Inderlied earned her spot in the girls 10-11 finals via performances in three events in North Carolina — June at Eagle Creek in Moyock, August at Duke University Golf Club in Durham and September at Quail Hollow, a Charlotte course that hosted last year’s Presidents Cup. She was born in Norfolk and is a fifth-grader at Linkhorn Park Elementary, and she considers Virginia Beach National her home course.
Today will be a thrill they’ll never forget.

Former Lake Taylor High and North Carolina State standout Dereon Seabron has been a key performer for the Birmingham Squadron. With that team in Alabama, the 6-foot-7 guard has averaged 18.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 0.9 steals and 34.5 minutes in 27 games. He has shot 50.3% from the floor (37.5% from beyond the arc) and 77.8% on free throws.
He has received occasional promotions to the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. He has played in five games for New Orleans for about 12 total minutes, scoring four points.
Another former N.C. State guard, Hampton High alum Cat Barber, hasn’t been in the NBA this season, but after playing for a Kiev team in war-torn Ukraine, he was in far more secure environs in Georgia with the G League’s College Park Skyhawks, who are affiliated with the Atlanta Hawks.
In 26 games this season, he averaged 10.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 0.6 steals and 21.1 minutes.
Pro hoops
Many mid-major NCAA basketball programs can’t boast of being the alma mater of even one current NBA player.
Radford has two just on the Chicago Bulls’ 17-man roster: Carlik Jones, a 6-foot guard, and Javonte Green, a 6-5 forward.
Jones is listed from Louisville, but he was a graduate transfer for the Cardinals after playing for the Highlanders. This year, Jones led the G League at 26.1 points per game for the Windy City Bulls.
