Ragone’s two homers spark W&M

Tribe hands St. John’s a second straight loss

Cole Ragone clubbed two home runs and had four RBIs as William & Mary captured its second consecutiv­e victory against St. John’s, hammering the Red Storm 15-6 Saturday at Plumeri Park.

The Tribe (17-11) got contributi­ons up and down the lineup, dropping St. John’s to 16-9.

Joe Delossanto­s continued his strong season, batting 3 for 5 with two runs and three RBIs. Ben Williamson was 3 for 5 with three runs and three RBIs, and Lucas Carmichael and Nate Goranson scored twice each.

Tribe pitchers Cory Wall, Nick Lottchea and Mike Weidinger yielded 14 hits but just two walks.

Norfolk State 5, Stonehill 2: The host Spartans (5-19, 3-5 Northeast Conference) beat the Seahawks (3-18, 1-7) for the second day in a row, ensuring a series victory.

Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, NSU took control with a fourrun inning. Manny Jackson hit a go-ahead two-run single through the right side, and Justin Journette followed with a two-run homer to right.

NSU starter Zac Capps yielded two runs and four hits in three innings, but relievers Max McCrary — who pitched five innings — Mac Yarbrough and John Horton shut out Stonehill thereafter.

Friday

Old Dominion 7, Georgia Southern 5: Camden Grimes, Alex Bouche

and Thomas Wheeler clubbed home runs as ODU won a Sun Belt series opener in Statesboro, Georgia.

The Monarchs (21-5, 6-1 Sun Belt), one of the nation’s top home-run hitting teams, went ahead to stay with a three-run third inning that included Grimes’ two-run homer and Jake Ticer’s RBI single.

Blake Morgan (3-2) gained the victory by pitching 5 ⅓ innings. John Holobetz captured a 2 ⅔-inning save, giving up one run on one hit and striking out three.

Bouche scored twice, Grimes had two RBIs and Wheeler drove in three runs.

The teams were scheduled to play again Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

No. 5 Virginia 9, Virginia Tech 5:

The Cavaliers (24-2, 8-2 ACC) scored the first nine runs of a 9-5 series-opening win at Virginia

Tech (15-10, 2-8). Heading into their rematch Saturday night in Blacksburg, the Cavaliers had won seven straight games, the longest win streak in the ACC.

Junior Ethan O’Donnell went 2 for 4 with a home run, three runs and three RBIs. His three-run homer in the second inning gave UVA a commanding, 6-0 advantage. Jake Gelof also drove in three runs in a 3-for-5, two-double, three-RBI performanc­e. Former Cox High standout Ethan Anderson added an RBI single in the first inning.

UVA right-hander Brian Edgington (5-0) pitched six innings in his start, did not allow a run and struck out eight batters.

William & Mary 4, St. John’s 3:

W&M erased a three-run deficit to win at Plumeri Park. Joe Delossanto­s’ RBI infield hit scored Nate Goranson with the winning run in the ninth inning.

Goranson slugged his second home run of the season, and Lucas Carmichael doubled twice for the Tribe.

Rojo Prarie pitched three scoreless innings for the victory. He struck out three and scattered a trio of hits, following Tom Mayer’s three scoreless innings of middle relief.

Home runs by Tate Ballestero and David Glancy in the third inning gave the Red Storm a 3-0 lead, but Goranson’s home run, Cole Ragone’s RBI single and Delossanto­s’ first RBI of the game tied the score at 3 in the seventh.

In the ninth, Goranson singled to right-center, went to second on Zach Zertuche’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Delossanto­s’ single into the hole at shortstop.
