Maury rolls to fifth straight district title

-

to play our best football because we haven’t yet. And I think that’s what keeps us hungry because we haven’t played our best.”

That’s great news for Maury fans, but bad news for opposing teams.

The Commodores (9-0, 6-0) have won 21 consecutive district games and wrapped up a fifth consecutive district title. They’re also ranked No. 89 nationally by MaxPreps rankings and No. 177 in the High School Football America 300 rankings.

Senior running back Melvin Lowe got Maury going early as he scored on touchdown runs of 17 and 38 yards to help give the Commodores a 13-0 lead.

Lowe, who didn’t have any carries in the second half, finished with 138 yards on just six carries.

“It felt good and it feels good to win like this on Senior Night,” he said. “I give all that to my O-line. I appreciate everything they do for me. And they sit back and let me know that they are going to block for me.”

When Lowe came out, the Commodores kept it rolling with Leon Clark and Damari Palmer. Clark, playing against his former team, finished with 38 yards and three touchdowns. Palmer added 89 yards.

“This is a good running game,” Lowe said about the three-headed monster. “But we always got something that we can get better at.”

Quarterback Au’Tori Newkirk, the second-leading passer in Hampton Roads, completed 12 of 18 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

The defense also played well as the Commodores limited Churchland’s Dontavius Booker, the leading rusher in Hampton Roads, to just 24 yards on 15 carries.

As a whole, the Truckers (6-3, 5-1) managed just 64 total yards.

“We take pride in not giving up points, just like we take pride in scoring points,” McCain said. “I think it works hand in hand.”
