Regent gets chance at a national title

- Sonny Dearth

Not only did the Regent University women’s volleyball team post its first winning season, it also qualified for the National Christian College Athletic Association championship tournament by winning a region event.

After defeating Clinton 3-2 in a semifinal, Regent (14-10) avenged two losses to Carolina University by beating the host Bruins

3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-22, 25-18) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. That earned the Royals a trip to Missouri for the nationals, which will begin Nov. 29.

In that match, Nicole Walston had 24 kills and 16 digs, Ella Simone had 42 assists and Makayla Daniels made 25 digs.

Representing the nation: The words “field hockey” and “men” don’t get mentioned in the same sentence often in the U.S., but here’s one time it deserves to be:

Zack Canady, of Suffolk, gained one of 15 spots on the 202324 Junior U.S. Men’s National Indoor Team. He plays for the Stick Power club.

Mid-Amateur goes to Moyers: Stanardsville’s Mikey Moyers posted a three-day total of 1-under 209 last weekend at Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club in Portsmouth to win the 47th Virginia State Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship.

Moyers, a three-time VSGA Junior Match Play champion, won his first VSGA individual title since 2009, finishing a stroke ahead of Elizabeth Manor member Adam Horton.

Moyers made 11 birdies in the first two rounds as he shot 68 and 64, but none in his final-round

77. He led by six shots with nine holes to play and won despite a double bogey on the final hole.

Brian Weaver of Suffolk’s Riverfront Golf Club finished in third at 3-over 213.

All-Amateur golf: A trio of players from Hampton Roads received recognition as part of Global Golf Post’s 10th All-Amateur team.

Evan Beck, of Virginia Beach, a Princess Anne Country Club member who has been one of the nation’s best amateurs in the past couple of years, was named to the All-Mid-Amateur men’s first team.

Roger Newsom, of Elizabeth Manor, made the men’s All-Senior first team. Jessica Spicer, from Cypress Point in Virginia Beach, made the All-Mid-Amateur women’s second team.
