Johnnie Albert “Al” Booker (80) of Gloucester Point, Virginia was called home Thursday, January 25, 2024. He was born September 23, 1943, to the late Calvin Roane and Carrie Eastwood Booker. After graduating from Randolph-Macon Academy in 1961, he worked for TriCounty Furniture Store, his family's business, until its close in 2019. Most afternoons, Al could be found in the front window of Tri-County greeting customers and visiting with his many friends. He was a lifelong member of the Gloucester Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD), and in his early teens, he was responsibl­e for sounding the alarm to call all volunteers to action. For many years, he supported the GVFD as the pitcher for The Smokers softball team. As a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox, he attended many games and proudly sported the team logo. Beyond the major leagues, he was a dedicated uncle who spent many hours in the stands cheering for nieces and nephews. Al was a wonderful husband and is survived by the love of his life, Janice Sterling Booker. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend, and is survived by five brother- and sister-in-laws: Diana Booker, Jean Sterling, Linda Sterling Kemp, Wayne Sterling, and Dennis Sterling (Robin); eight nieces and nephews: Roane Booker (Stephanie), Tabitha Booker Dyess (Bruno), Charlene West (Morris), Billie Jean Pickford (Chris), Penny Smith (Cheslie), Melanie Hamilton (Jeff), Jennifer Owens (Stephen), Stephanie Hutson (Neale) and Richard Hogge; and, many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin Roane Booker, Jr.; sister, Annette Booker McGhee; niece and nephews, Carey Sterling Hogge, Bill Sterling, and Dennis Sterling II. Al was greatly loved and will be terribly missed. The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Monday, January 29, 2024, from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. A Celebratio­n of Life Service, officiated by Pastor Ed Walker, will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Bellamy United Methodist Church, 4870 Chestnut Fork Rd, Gloucester, VA 23061, beginning at 11:00 am with burial to follow in the church cemetery. In memory of Al, memorial contributi­ons may be made to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad at PO Box 1417, Gloucester, VA 23061. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
