Shirley Edsall Holmes

Shirley Edsall Holmes, 91, of Newport News passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024. She was born in Sussex, NJ, the only daughter of the late Francis and Dorothy Edsall. She was very active in her church, Warwick United Church of Christ, and sang in the choir for many years.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Lisa Carolyn; and her only sibling, Louis Edsall of San Diego, CA.

She graduated from Becker Junior College in 1950 and worked as a medical secretary/ assistant for many years.

In September of 1953, she married Harlan “Bucky” Holmes and they eventually made their home in Newport News where he was employed at NASA. While raising her children, she was involved in many other activities, one being volunteering at Peninsula Reads, teaching adults how to read. This was the most satisfying endeavor for her. She is survived by her children, Cindy Mills and her husband, Chuck of Portsmouth, VA, Dianne Holmes of Las Vegas, NV, and Tim Holmes of Virginia Beach, VA. She also leaves behind four granddaughters: Erica Jones, Emily Austin, Becky Mizelle, and Katrina Holmes; and nine greatgrandchildren: Giovanni, Triston, Sevyn, Izabella, Malachi, Alonah, Kayla, Ryan and Jackson. Funeral Services will conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Weymouth Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. A reception will be held at Warwick United Church of Christ.
