W&M walks off with victory

UMass Lowell’s error in 10th ends game

Trey Christman scored on a throwing error by pitcher Brian Foley in the bottom of the 10th inning to give William & Mary a 5-4 victory Saturday over UMass Lowell at Plumeri Park in Williamsbu­rg.

William & Mary (5-1) had only five hits, but took advantage of three UMass Lowell errors to score three unearned runs. Corey Adams had two RBIs, Joe Delossanto­s had two hits and Christman finished with three runs for the Tribe.

Reliever Reed Interdonat­o (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing an unearned run in four innings.

The Scarlet Knights (5-0) took a 2-0 series edge in Norfolk by handing the Monarchs (3-3) their third straight defeat.

The Scarlet Knights went ahead 6-0 by scoring twice in the first, third and fifth innings. The Monarchs responded with a six-run fifth, but Rutgers scored on RJ Johnson Jr.’s home run to right in the sixth and held on.

ODU’s big inning included RBI singles by Steven Meier and Jake Ticer, Kyle Edwards’ two-run single and Alex Bouche’s two-run double.

Rutgers 7, Old Dominion 6:

Manhattan 5, Norfolk State 2:

The Jaspers won a series opener at Marty L. Miller Field in Game 1 of a doublehead­er as Greg Shaw struck out four in four scoreless innings for a save.

NSU’s Dalton Barham (1-1) took the loss despite yielding just three runs (one earned) and six hits in six innings. He struck out seven.

Manhattan led 3-0 before NSU’s Manny Jackson doubled down the right-field line to drive in Jamal Ritter and Jalan Jones. RBI hits by Chase Swain in the eighth and Daniel Perez in the ninth reinstated the Jaspers’ three-run edge.

Virginia Tech 7, Rhode Island 2:

Garrett Michel went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer and the Hokies went deep four times to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series in Blacksburg.

Chris Cannizzaro, David McCann and Gehrig Ebel also homered for Virginia Tech (4-2). Christian Martin went 3 for 5 with an RBI. Reliever David Shoemaker (1-0) picked up the victory for the Hokies with 1 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

Virginia Wesleyan 6, New Paltz 3:

Thomas Crandall was 4 for 5 with a run and two RBIs as the Marlins improved to 4-3 by beating the Hawks (2-2) of New York in Virginia Beach. Sam Saunders scored twice, stole a base and was 1 for 1.

Ian Brady (1-1), who gave up two runs (one earned) in three innings, got relief from Sal Lettieri, Sean Keener and Ryan Cowell to close the game.

Cortland 5, Christophe­r Newport 4:

The 20th-ranked Captains (6-2), playing their third top-25 Division III foe in two days in Greensboro, North Carolina, lost to the No. 10 Red Dragons (2-3) of New York after beating Ohio teams Denison and Marietta on Friday.

Doc Daniels slugged his second three-run homer in two days for CNU, tying the score at 4 in the top of the eighth. Cortland responded with a walk and two singles for the eventual winning run, then retired the Captains in order in the ninth.

Apprentice School 16-10, Bucks County Community College 0-4:

The Builders (11-2) romped to a sweep at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton against a team from Newtown, Pennsylvan­ia, extending their winning streak to six.

In Game 1, Isaac McCalliste­r pitched a five-inning one-hitter, striking out eight Centurions. Nolan Edwards batted 3 for 4 and drove in two runs. He and Jett Winslow scored three times, and Matt Phoebus had three RBIs.

In Game 2, Apprentice scored nine runs in the first after falling behind 4-0. Jeremy Harmon had three hits, Cianan Moaratty drove in three runs and Connor Gregory was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Late Friday

William & Mary 11, UMass Lowell 1:

Tribe pitchers Alex Markus, Mark Hindy (2-0), Zack Potts and Travis Garnett combined to throw a two-hitter in the series opener.

Ben Parker scored four runs and batted 2 for 3, and Joe Delossanto­s was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Both of them homered, as did Luca Trigiani.

After a three-hour delay, the Scarlet Knights scored multiple runs in the first three innings and led 7-0 after 2 handing John Holobetz (1-1) a defeat. Kyle Edwards’ two-run homer in the third inning and Steven Meier’s single in the seventh provided ODU’s scoring.

Rutgers 10, Old Dominion 3: Virginia Tech 18, Rhode Island 3:

Ben Watson had four hits — all for extra bases — and seven RBIs as the Hokies dusted URI to start a series in Blacksburg. Brett Renfrow pitched five innings for the victory. Virginia Beach’s Carson DeMartini was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk.

No. 14 Virginia 5, Wichita State 4, 10 innings:

UVA (5-0) won when Henry Ford laced a two-run double off the right-center-field wall in the bottom of the 10th inning at the Jax Collegiate Classic in Jacksonvil­le, Florida. Righthande­r Aidan Teel was credited with his first collegiate win and struck out five batters in two innings.
