Norfolk State boosts win streak to 8 games

Kierra Wheeler accumulate­d 22 points, 11 rebounds and four assists as Norfolk State’s women defeated Coppin State 64-51 Saturday in Baltimore to retain a two-game lead in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and extend their winning streak to eight.

Da’Brya Clark, Diamond Johnson and freshman AJ Richardson scored 10 points for the Spartans (20-5, 9-1).

Coppin State (9-15, 6-4) got 19 rebounds (10 offensive) and 13 points from Laila Lawrence, 12 points, six rebounds and four assists from Tyler Gray and 10 points and eight rebounds from Angel Jones.

The Eagles started the second quarter with an 8-0 flurry for a 22-18 edge, but NSU responded with seven consecutiv­e points and never trailed again.

Old Dominion 67, Georgia State 51:

En’Dya Buford scored 25 points as ODU pulled into a tie for third place in the Sun Belt Conference by winning in Atlanta.

The Monarchs (20-7, 11-5), who have two regular-season games remaining, need to finish among the top four to gain a pass to the quarterfin­als. They’re now even with rival James Madison, their final foe before the tournament, two games ahead of three teams tied for fifth, including Georgia State.

Also for ODU, Jordan McLaughlin had 12 points and Simone Cunningham had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Georgia State, led by Crystal Henderson’s 13 points, fell to 15-12, 9-7.

No. 5 Texas 87, Central Florida 56:

Texas (26-3, 13-3 Big 12) forced 21 turnovers and got 22 points from Madison Booker to roll in Orlando. The Longhorns held the Knights (12-14, 3-13) to four points in the second quarter, outscoring them by 19, to take control of the game and secure their eighth straight win.

No. 24 Baylor 66, No. 22 West Virginia 65:

Jana Van Gytenbeek came off the bench to make two free throws with 4.3 seconds left, and Baylor (21-6, 10-6 Big 12) pulled out a wild road win despite Lake Taylor High alumna JJ Quinerly’s career-high 33 points for the Mountainee­rs (22-5, 11-5).

George Mason 82, Richmond 76, OT:

Sonia Smith scored 23 points as the Patriots (22-5, 13-3) outlasted the Spiders (24-5, 14-2) in Fairfax. Maggie Doogan scored 20 for UR, whose seven-game winning streak ended.
