H-SC tops VWU to win ODAC semifinal

Virginia Wesleyan’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament title chances ended Saturday with a 63-52 semifinal loss to Hampden-Sydney at Salem Civic Center, though the sixth-seeded Marlins retain some hope of gaining one of the 22 at-large selections to the NCAA Division III Tournament’s 64-team field.

VWU is 19-8 with numerous quality victories, spent some time in the d3hoops.com Top 25 and didn’t lose to a non-ODAC team all season. The Marlins and others will learn their fate when the field is revealed at 1 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com.

Paul Anderson scored 10 points for VWU, Amarion Wilson nine, Amari Moorer eight and Jordan Crump seven for VWU.

Adam Brazil led H-SC, the No. 2 seed in the tournament but the nation’s top-ranked team according to d3hoops.com, with 20 points and six assists, while Josiah Hubbard had 14 points and seven rebounds. The Tigers outrebound­ed the Marlins 44-32.

In the other semifinal, Washington and Lee (18-9) stunned top-seeded RandolphMa­con 74-71 on A.J. Thomas’ 3-point shot with nine seconds remaining to gain a spot in today’s 1 p.m. final against H-SC.

Northeaste­rn 70, Hampton 62:

Despite big games by Tedrick Wilcox Jr. and Ja’Von Benson, the Pirates’ winning streak ended at two with a loss in Boston. Chris Doherty’s 21 points and 12 rebounds led the Huskies (12-17, 7-9 Coastal Athletic Associatio­n). Harold Woods added 12 points and five rebounds.

Wilcox led the Pirates (7-22, 2-14) with 19 points and three steals. Benson added 18 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks for Hampton. Jordan Nesbitt finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Northeaste­rn took the lead with 16:40 remaining in the first half and did not relinquish it. The Huskies were ahead 40-22 at halftime and then 58-32, though HU pulled to 66-60 with 33 seconds remaining.

Stony Brook 75, William & Mary 62:

The Tribe’s losing streak reached eight with a defeat to the Seawolves (16-13, 9-7 CAA) in New York state. Tyler Stephenson-Moore’s 18 points and six rebounds sparked Stony Brook, which never surrendere­d the lead after the first minute-anda-half.

W&M (8-21, 3-13) was led by Trey Moss, who recorded 16 points, four assists and four steals. Gabe Dorsey added 15 points and two steals, and his brother Caleb had 14 points and eight rebounds.

James Madison 80, Georgia Southern 74:

Terrance Edwards Jr. scored 20 for the Dukes (26-3, 13-3 Sun Belt), who erased a 19-point deficit in Statesboro to add to their school-record victory total and win their eighth consecutiv­e game.

Tyren Moore scored 27 for the Eagles (6-23, 6-10), who led 43-24 before seeing JMU pull ahead for the first time, 65-64, on Jamestown High graduate Xavier Brown’s 3-pointer with 5:36 to go. Raekwon Horton dunked while being fouled to break a 69-69 tie with 3:46 remaining.

Loyola Chicago 80, George Mason 59:

Amari Kelly scored 19 points as the host Ramblers (20-7, 12-2), who began the day sharing first place in the Atlantic 10 with Richmond, routed the Patriots (18-9, 7-7) to end George Mason’s three-game winning streak. Loyola has won seven in a row.

Radford 88, Longwood 82:

DaQuan Smith’s 21 points, including 6-of-12 3-point shooting, helped the Highlander­s (15-14, 5-9 Big South) win at home to end a three-game winning streak by the Lancers (17-12, 5-9). Radford’s Justin Archer and former Oscar Smith High guard Kenyon Giles added 17 points apiece.

Landstown High graduate Michael Christmas had 17 points and two steals for Longwood.

Western Carolina 84, VMI 51:

Russell Jones’ 15 points for the Catamounts (20-9, 9-7 Southern Conference) in Lexington helped hand the Keydets their 10th straight loss. Tre Jackson had 15 points for WCU. The Keydets (4-25, 1-15) were led by Tyran Cook, who finished with 18 points and four assists.
