Wake upsets Duke; Filipowski shaken up as fans storm court

-

Hunter Sallis scored 29 points and Andrew Carr had a huge second-half performance to help Wake Forest edge No. 8 Duke 83-79 on Saturday in Winston-Salem, earning a massive boost to its NCAA Tournament chances.

As Demon Deacons fans stormed the court to celebrate, Duke star Kyle Filipowski appeared to be shaken up after a collision with a fan running by him as he walked toward the locker room tunnel. He was hobbled and had to be helped off the court amid the chaos.

“Just like any other upset game where the fans rush the court, all hell goes crazy,” said Filipowski, whose right leg was wrapped in plastic to fasten an icebag to his kneecap. “Just trying to get my way off the court, and you know, you’ve got these crazy college students just doing whatever they want. It’s got to be a little more protective when things like that happen.”

Duke coach Jon Scheyer added: “When are we going to ban court-storming?”

Sallis capped this one by hitting two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to start the celebration for the Demon Deacons (18-9, 10-6). And Carr finished with 16 of his 18 points after halftime, including dominant stretches coming out of the break that had the Demon Deacons feeding him to facilitate out of the post or score over Mark Mitchell inside.

Filipowski had 17 points to lead the Blue Devils (21-6, 12-4).

Syracuse 88, Notre Dame 85:

Judah Mintz scored 21 points and Syracuse pulled out a win over Notre Dame after nearly giving up a 29-point lead on “Jim Boeheim Day.”

Over 25,000 fans plus friends, family and former players came out to honor Boeheim, who took in his second game on the Orange’s home court since retiring last season before being honored in a postgame ceremony. He led the Syracuse program for 47 years — all but one a winning season — and into 35 NCAA Tournaments, including a national championship in 2003.

It looked like it would be a game-long party after Syracuse (18-10, 9-8) rolled to a 29-point lead late in the first half only to see Notre Dame (10-17, 5-11) rally behind freshmen Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry, who combined for 38 second-half points.

North Carolina State 81, Boston College 70:

D.J. Burns Jr. scored 19 points, Jayden Taylor added 15 and North Carolina State defeated Boston College at home.

DJ Horne and Casey Morsell scored 13 points apiece for the Wolfpack (17-10, 9-7), who had only two more field goals than Boston College, but made 21 of 24 free throws and outscored the Eagles 18-6 off 16 turnovers.

Mason Madsen scored 21 points, Prince Aligbe 12 and former Landstown High star Donald Hand Jr. 11 for Boston College (15-12, 6-10).

Miles Kelly tied a career high with seven 3-pointers in scoring 25 points and Georgia Tech (12-16, 5-12) edged Miami (15-13, 6-11) on the road.
