UMass deals No. 13 UVA its first loss

Minutemen snap Cavs’ streak at nine games; ODU tops Charlotte

Massachuse­tts ended No. 13 Virginia’s season-opening winning streak at nine by beating the Cavaliers 10-5 Saturday at Disharoon Park in Charlottes­ville.

Michael Toth and Matt Travisano each had four hits for the Minutemen (2-4), who led 6-0 after 3 ½ innings. All of those runs (four earned) were charged to losing pitcher Jack O’Connor in 3 ⅔ innings.

Casey Saucke led the Cavaliers by batting 3 for 5 with an RBI.

Old Dominion 4, Charlotte 1:

Dylan Brown and two relievers combined on a four-hitter, and the Monarchs took advantage of a fielding error to score three runs in the first inning as they evened the series at a game apiece.

Brown allowed one hit in 4 ⅓ innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Lincoln Ransom (1-0) picked up the victory with 1 ⅔ scoreless innings and Jacob Gomez notched his third save, allowing a run in three innings with five strikeouts.

Kyle Edwards went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run and Alex Bouche went 2 for 3 with a run for ODU (6-4).

Brandon Stahlman drove in the lone run for the 49ers (6-5) with an RBI double in the ninth.

Christophe­r Newport 11, Immaculata 4:

Josh Reinhold was 3 for 5 with five RBIs and two runs as CNU (7-2), ranked 15th in Division III, beat the Macs (3-2) of Philadelph­ia in Fayettevil­le, North Carolina. Zach Dzarnowski was 2 for 5 with three RBIs, and Scott Crosson had three walks and two hits and scored three times.

Winner Dylan Weber (2-0) struck out six and gave up three hits and an unearned run in five innings.

Friday

Apprentice School 12-7, Virginia Peninsula Community College 2-0: Nick Redman (2-0), Justin

Bradshaw and Jaeden Anderson pitched a combined no-hitter Friday in a 7-0 Game 2 victory as Apprentice School swept a doublehead­er against Virginia Peninsula Community College at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

The Builders (15-2) continued their sizzling start. In Game 2, Nate Yeary had three hits. He and Matt Phoebus scored twice each, and Camden Weston, Riggs Ellis and Nolan Edwards drove in two runs apiece.

Redman walked two and struck out five in four innings, Bradshaw walked three and struck out none in two innings, and Jaeden Anderson struck out one in a 1-2-3 seventh to close the victory.

In Game 1, Apprentice won 12-2, ending the game via the 10-run mercy rule with a seven-run fifth inning. Logan Earley (2-1) pitched a four-hitter for the victory.

Weston drove in three runs, while Yeary, Edwards, Caleb Russell and Hunter Johnson scored twice each. Russell was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Edwards and Matt Phoebus also had two RBIs.
