Old Dominion routs No. 20 Coastal Carolina

Monarchs hit five homers, square series

Old Dominion posted likely its most impressive victory of the baseball season, slugging five home runs while thumping No. 20 Coastal Carolina 15-4 Saturday in Conway, South Carolina, to level their Sun Belt series at a win apiece.

Alex Bouche was 3 for 6 with two runs and four RBIs for the Monarchs (16-14, 5-6), Kenny Levari was 2 for 5 with two runs and three RBIs, Luke Waters was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs, Kenny Edwards was 2 for 5 with three runs, and Nick Mueller was 2 for 5 with a run and two RBIs. All of them hit home runs, and Steven Meier was 3 for 5 with four runs.

Reliever Jacob Gomez completed the game with 4 ⅔ shutout innings against the Chanticlee­rs (21-9, 6-5), striking out nine, walking none and yielding three hits.

Christophe­r Newport 9, Mary Washington 5:

The host Captains (17-6), ranked 18th in Division III, had 15 hits, including four by Josh Reinhold, as they beat the rival Eagles (18-7) in a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference clash. CNU led 9-1 after five innings and won its sixth consecutiv­e game.

Doc Daniels had four RBIs. Brandon Cassedy pitched eight innings, striking out 11, for the victory.

No. 10 North Carolina 12, No. 15 Virginia 7:

After the Cavaliers (25-7, 9-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) erased a 6-0 deficit before 5,919 fans in Charlottes­ville, the Tar Heels (26-6, 11-4) struck back with three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to salvage one victory in a three-game series.

UNC’s Parks Harber had three hits and four RBIs.

UVA had 13 hits, including three by Bobby Whalen and two apiece by Griff O’Ferrall, Casey Saucke, Henry Ford and Cox High alum Ethan Anderson.

Monmouth 2, William & Mary 0:

Alec Couture (2-3) struck out nine and gave up four hits (all singles) in seven shutout innings as the Hawks (8-16, 4-4 Coastal Athletic Associatio­n) leveled their series against the Tribe (21-10, 5-3) in New Jersey. Austin Denlinger singled in a run in the first inning and scored on Phil Stahl’s single to right in the fifth, giving Zack Potts (4-2) a hard-luck loss.

In the opener of a Northeast Conference doublehead­er in Trenton, New Jersey, Diego Tavarez slugged a two-run homer to right field for a walk-off victory. Entering Game 2, the Spartans were 8-21, 4-9, while the Seahawks were 12-16, 10-3.

Wagner 4, Norfolk State 2: Averett 7-6, Virginia Wesleyan 5-14:

The Marlins (16-11, 8-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) took Game 2 for a split against the Cougars (7-20, 3-9) in Danville.

In the opener, the Cougars built a 7-1 lead and held on.

In Game 2, Thomas Crandall, Micah Fox and Nick Sylvester drove in three runs apiece for VWU. Crandall and Keegan Megaro each had three hits and scored twice. Jack McDowell pitched 6 ⅓ innings for the victory.

Late Friday

No. 15 Virginia 7, No. 10 North Carolina 2:

Cox High graduate Ethan Anderson blasted solo home runs in the seventh and eighth innings as the Cavaliers registered their second series win against a top-10 opponent. Starting pitcher Evan Blanco logged his longest outing of his career (6 ⅓ innings) and struck out seven.

No. 21 Wake Forest 8, No. 11 Virginia Tech 5:

The Hokies (21-6, 10-3 ACC) fell at home to the Demon Deacons (19-10, 5-8) despite Eddie Micheletti’s grand slam in the third, which put Tech ahead 5-3.

No. 20 Coastal Carolina 9, Old Dominion 2:

After four scoreless innings, Coastal Carolina broke through with an eight-run bottom of the fifth. Luke Waters’ double in the sixth and Maverick Stallings’ single in the seventh brought in runs for ODU.
