Vote buying

- — Tom Dillon, Virginia Beach

Re “Biden promotes ‘life-changing’ student loan relief in Wisconsin as he rallies younger voters” (April 8): The article doesn’t even pretend that this attempt is anything other than a scheme to buy votes from young voters — without doubt one of the biggest vote-buying, voter-bribery schemes in the history of our democracy. There are so many things wrong with what President Joe Biden is doing with his student loan ploys that you can’t give me the space to write about them all. Let’s start with just a few:

This isn’t debt forgiveness or cancellation; it’s a shift of the obligations from those who willingly took them on to present and future taxpayers, who have had no say in having these debts dumped on them. This shift is flagrantly unfair to all of those who didn’t go to college, or who were responsible enough to pay their own way and pay back their loans.

College has become ridiculously expensive, in part because colleges know they can pass their inflated costs to students and parents via loans that bear little to no relation to the borrower’s ability to repay. Now that colleges know Uncle Sam will be picking up more of their costs, they not only have no incentive to control costs, they have every incentive to keep increasing them. Instead of solving the problem of college costs, Biden is making it worse.

Where does this end? Future college students will be looking for forgiveness of loans as well, a new entitlement created without congressional approval and with an almost unlimited future cost.

You don’t have to be a former President Donald Trump supporter or a Republican to be outraged by the corruption behind this unpopular president’s giveaway of taxpayer money to buy votes to shore up his faltering electoral prospects.
