W&M evens series with home victory against N.C. A&T

Jackson’s grand slam sparks Tribe

William & Mary leveled a series at Plumeri Park at North Carolina A&T, defeating the Aggies 7-4 Saturday.

The Tribe (24-11, 7-4 Coastal Athletic Associatio­n) took a 6-0 lead in the first three innings, thanks in large part to Henry Jackson’s grand slam in the first. Josiah Seguin socked a sixth-inning homer for W&M.

Zack Potts (5-2) pitched 6 ⅓ innings for the victory, giving up four hits and four runs (one earned). Carter Lovasz shut out A&T (19-15, 4-7) for the last 2 ⅔ innings, striking out five.

James Madison 7, Old Dominion 5:

Hampton Roads natives helped the Dukes (21-13, 7-7 Sun Belt) square their Royal Rivalry series with the Monarchs (17-17, 6-8) in Norfolk.

Cox High graduate Fenwick Trimble was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs. Hickory High alum Mason Dunaway was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

For ODU, Luke Waters was 3 for 5 and Steven Meier drove in two runs.

Virginia Wesleyan 9-8, Ferrum 8-14:

Nick Sylvester clubbed a walk-off solo homer in Game 1 for the Marlins (18-12, 10-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) in the ninth inning of a split doublehead­er against the Panthers.

In Game 1, Sylvester, Micah Fox, Michael Burton Jr. and Samuel Kasprow drove in two runs apiece for the Marlins, and Thomas Crandall scored three. Bryce Thacker led Ferrum, going 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs.

In Game 2, Ferrum (11-19, 4-11) bounced back behind Shawn Baxter’s homer, double and six RBIs, going ahead to stay with a three-run third for a 5-2 edge. The Panthers led 14-5 before VWU’s three-run ninth.

Coppin State 9, Norfolk State 8:

The Eagles (8-19, 7-10 Northeast Conference) took a 2-0 lead in the series in Norfolk despite being outhit 14-6 by the Spartans (9-24, 5-12).

Manny Jackson drove in three runs, Jamal Ritter scored three and Jalan Jones had three hits for the Spartans. They led 8-6 in a seesaw game until three walks preceded Brody Black’s basesloade­d single, which turned into a three-run, go-ahead play because of an outfield gaffe, one of five errors committed by NSU.

Louisville 14, No. 11 Virginia 10:

Led by Ryan McCoy’s two home runs and seven RBIs, the host Cardinals (21-12, 7-7 ACC) evened their series with the Cavaliers (27-8, 10-7), capitalizi­ng on UVA’s season-high four errors.

Griff O’Ferrall (2 for 4, two RBIs) and Lafayette High graduate Luke Hanson (2 for 4, one run, one RBI) starred for UVA. Freshman Eric Becker drove in three runs, and Aidan Teel slugged a three-run, pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning. UVA starter Kevin Jaxel (4-1) gave up five runs and five hits in the first inning, and Louisville led 9-1 after three.

Apprentice 22-11, Lighthouse 2-1: The first-place Builders (30-7, 8-2

New South Athletic Conference) romped in a doublehead­er at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton against the Makos (2-17, 1-7) of Pensacola, Florida.

Salisbury 18, Christophe­r Newport 3:

The host Sea Gulls (22-6), ranked fourth in Division III, scored five runs in the first and five more in the third to move ahead 10-2 against the 15th-ranked Captains (19-7) in a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference showdown, dealing starter Brandon Cassedy a defeat. CNU had seven hits but committed five errors as its eight-game winning streak ended.

Danny Sheeler was 4 for 5 with two runs and four RBIs, highlighti­ng Salisbury’s 17-hit attack. Doc Daniels was 2 for 2 with a run for CNU.

Late Friday

Old Dominion 7, James Madison 1:

Jay Cassady and John Holobetz had a shutout going through 8 ⅓ innings for ODU at Bud Metheny Ballpark. Cassady started and held the Dukes to just one hit and one walk in four innings. Holobetz (3-4) took over from there and kept JMU off the scoreboard until the ninth inning. He scattered four hits, issued one walk and struck out three.

ODU’s Evan Holman went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, one run and a walk, while TJ Aiken also finished 2 for 3 and drove in a run. Maverick Stallings was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and scored once.

No. 11 Virginia 21, Louisville 3:

UVA (27-7, 10-6 ACC) reached the 20-run plateau for the third time this season, rolling in a series opener at Louisville (20-12, 6-7). The Cavaliers belted five home runs as part of a 21-hit night.

Junior Ethan Anderson, a Cox High graduate, scored four times and put forth a 5-for-5 effort, the second five-hit game of his career.

The 21 runs are the most in an ACC game this season and the most by the Cavaliers in a conference game since they plated 27 against Maryland on April 23, 2010. Virginia plated 10 runs in the ninth inning.

Henry Ford and Jacob Ference each homered twice.

No. 16 Virginia Tech 11, Georgia Tech 1:

Hammering four home runs among their 20 hits, the Hokies (23-8, 11-5 ACC) dusted the Yellow Jackets (20-12, 5-8) in a series opener before 1,093 in Atlanta.

Carson DeMartini of Virginia Beach was 3 for 5 with a run, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Brett Renfrow (5-1) pitched six innings in his start for the win.

Freshman designated hitter David McCann notched his second multi-homer game of his rookie season, clubbing solo shots in the fifth and sixth innings.

North Carolina A&T 8, William & Mary 4:

The Tribe lost a series opener for the first time since the season’s opening night. TJ Ash was 3 for 4 with four RBIs for A&T. Coley Kilpatrick (5-1) gave up five hits, five walks and four earned runs in 5 ⅓ innings but got the victory. Relievers Avery Cain and Angel Ortiz shut out W&M thereafter.

Tribe starter Alex Markus (1-3) and reliever Reed Interdonat­o each gave up three runs in three innings. Henry Jackson’s two RBIs and two hits led the Tribe.
