Modern-day Nero

Daily Press - - Opinion -

The recent Trump shutdown in response to criticism by right-wing punditry illustrates a defining characteristic of his presidency, and why he will be ranked among the worst presidents in American history.

Without exception, Donald Trump’s personal and business interests have been the decisive influence in all of his policy decisions, and behavior with to respect to democratic norms and institutions.

This has been true in decisions with regard to Saudi Arabia, China, Russia, and his recent decision to remove troops from Syria (he has hotels in Turkey).

His attacks on the free press, and attempts to undermine the rule of law (firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions, attacking the FBI, DOJ and the Robert Mueller investigation) are also in response to perceived threats to himself from these democratic institutions.

Trump is a modern day Nero who would figuratively burn the institutions of democracy, for his own selfish purposes, and he has made Washington a ‘circus’ to entertain his ‘plebeian’ base.

We now end the second year of this abominable, quasireality show, and Trump has continued to confirm his unfitness, and once again earns a failing grade. Christina Anne Knight Newport News
