HU loses, but VCU, Captains prevail
Presbyterian handed Hampton University its first Big South defeat, leading throughout the second half and beating the conference newcomers 85-70 in Clinton, S.C. HU fell to 7-9, 2-1.
VCU 76, Dayton 71: Marcus Evans scored VCU's last seven points as the Rams (12-5, 3-1 Atlantic 10) won at home.
Christopher Newport 77, Southern Virginia 54: Luther Gibbs scored 16 and Marcus Carter 14 for the 18th-ranked Captains in Buena Vista.
George Mason 68, Massachusetts 63: Justin Kier scored 22 points, Javon Greene added a career-high 19 points and the Patriots (10-8, 4-1 Atlantic 10) won in Amherst, Mass.
Duquesne 74, Richmond 68: Sincere Carry scored 21 points with six assists as Duquesne won at Richmond for the first time in more than 25 years.
Frankie Hughes added 15 points on five 3-pointers and Marcus Weathers had 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Dukes (12-5, 3-1 Atlantic 10), who posted their first victory at Richmond since Dec. 20, 1993, a span of 11 games.
Nathan Cayo scored a careertying 23 points and Jacob Gilyard had 22 for Richmond, which shot 53 percent but had just two 3-pointers to 10 for the Dukes.
Louisville 80, Boston College 70: Jordan Nwora scored 18 of his career-high 32 points before the break, then added five points late for the host Cardinals.
Temple 85, East Carolina 74: Shizz Alston Jr. scored 23 points with a career-high tying seven 3-pointers, Quinton Rose added 19 points and Temple (14-3, 4-1 American) won in Greenville, N.C.
Freshman Jayden Gardner, averaging a league-best 19.4 points per game, scored 27 for ECU (8-9, 1-4), which has lost three straight.
Kansas State 74, No. 20 Oklahoma 61: Barry Brown scored 25 points and Dean Wade added 20 for the visiting Wildcats.
It was Kansas State's second straight road win over a ranked team — the Wildcats won at Iowa State last Saturday. It was also Wade's second game back since missing six in a row with a torn tendon in his right foot.
Kansas State (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) shot 50 percent from the field against an Oklahoma squad that was holding opponents to 37.7 percent shooting, ninth nationally.
Women
No. 1 Notre Dame 80, Virginia Tech 51: Jessica Shepard had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the Irish took command with a 24-1 run in the second quarter at Cassell Coliseum.
Arike Ogunbowale added 19 points for the Irish (17-1, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Irish trailed 24-18 before Marina Mabrey sparked the run with her third 3-pointer of the first half. The burst took just six minutes and ended with Notre Dame ahead 42-25.
Tech (13-4, 0-4) had lost its first three conference games by a combined 13 points.
VCU 47, Fordham 44: VCU rallied from a 17-point deficit in New York to improve to 4-0 in the Atlantic 10. Danielle Hammond had 17 points to lead VCU.
Southern Virginia 58, Christopher Newport 54: The Knights (14-1, 5-0 Capital Athletic Conference) overcame a 12-point deficit to post their first-ever victory over CNU (12-4, 3-2) and their 13th consecutive win overall, leading students to storm the court.
