No. 1 Kellam boys spike No. 3 Grassfield in volleyball duel

Riley McRandle and Danny Nunez combined for 15 kills as the top-ranked Knights defeated the No. 3 Grizzlies 25-13, 25-17, 25-18 in a top-15 bout Tuesday at Kellam.

Carson Brickey and Kyle Goff combined for 15 digs for Kellam (3-0).

“This was actually supposed to be a bye week for us, but the boys really wanted to challenge themselves and play against Grassfield because they knew it was a highly competitiv­e team,” Kellam coach Michelle Neaves said. “We had some great plays and worked well as a team. They were super-excited to be able to get this big win today.”

Ocean Lakes 3, Indian River 0

Noah Naas and Pierce Corson combined for 18 kills, Lucas Bushey had 18 digs and the No. 5 Dolphins swept the No. 9 Braves 25-16, 25-22, 25-18.

Tony Velazquez delivered 28 assists for Ocean Lakes (5-3).

Cox 3, Landstown 0

Daniel Hurley and Jason Wang each had five kills to lead the No. 2 Falcons in a 25-17, 25-11, 25-17 victory over the No. 7 Eagles.

Tyler Poole had five aces, while setter Tanner Bailey dished out 15 assists.

Maury 3, Hickory 0

Cooper Chiles and Carter Alexander combined for 16 kills as the No. 8 Commodores defeated the No. 14 Hawks 25-18, 25-15, 30-28.

Jack Phillips dished out 15 assists while Cole Weaver added

13 digs in the victory. Hickory 20, Currituck (N.C.) 0

Following a scoreless first half, Jaramis Council scored on a rushing touchdown in the third quarter before the host Hawks (1-0) extended that lead with two touchdowns in the final frame.

Trevontae Harper and Michael Evans each scored rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Cape Henry 4, Tabb 0

Olivia Zettervall had a pair of goals for the No. 4 Dolphins and Aleezah Adams had four saves in their win over the No. 8 Tigers.

“Tabb is the strongest team we have played in the regular season so far,” Cape Henry coach Kate Kinnear said. “I was pleased with the girls coming out with a high level of intensity.”

Ocean Lakes 1, Kellam 0

Kaitlyn McMahon scored off a Kelly McCarty assist in the first half, and the Dolphins held on for the upset over the No. 10 Knights.

“The girls worked really hard and I’m pleased with how they played today,” coach Kristen Vick said. “There was a lot of field hockey to be played, and we did a great job not getting overly confident after the goal.” Salem 322, Green Run DNQ

Brother and sister duo Mason and Delaney McCoy each shot a 2-over 72 to earn co-medalist honors and lead the SunDevils.
