PA sophomore Chapman ruins Eagles’ Senior Night

VIRGINIA BEACH — Princess Anne didn’t look good at all in the first half.

The No. 14 Cavaliers couldn’t get anything going offensively as they watched No. 11 Landstown take the early lead.

But the Cavaliers woke up in the second half, thanks to sophomore Tychaun Chapman, who scored three touchdowns — four in all — to help Princess Anne spoil Senior Night for Landstown with a 28-19 come-from-behind victory.

Landstown (6-3), which came in riding a five-game winning streak, jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Jaylen Parham scored on a 3-yard touchdown run and Luqman Haskett scored on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Christopher Price.

That lead held up until Chapman returned a punt 92 yards for a touchdown with 1:54 left in the first quarter to get the Cavaliers (7-2) back in the game. The play didn’t begin well as Chapman dropped the punt, slipped but stayed on his feet.

“After I dropped it, I said, ‘I see something right there,’ ” he said. “Once I saw it, I hit it, and once I broke that tackle, I knew I was gone.”

He scored again in the third quarter when he took a short pass from Mike Newell and turned it into a 46-yard touchdown to give Princess Anne a 14-13 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Chapman and Newell hooked up again on another 46-yard touchdown, and the Cavaliers led 20-13.

“I know if they’re checking me one-on-one, I know they can’t check me,” said Chapman, who finished with five receptions for 138 yards and three touchdowns. “They have to double-team me. If they don’t, I know I’m going to score because one man isn’t going to stop me.”

Landstown cut the deficit to 20-19 on Price’s 36yard touchdown pass to Carlton Winston.

But Chapman virtually sealed it with a 19-yard touchdown reception in the final minutes. Tony Grimes put the game out of reach on a 2-point conversion as the Cavaliers beat Landstown for the first time since 2014.

“Tychaun really took over the game,” Princess Anne coach James Yeager said. “And Tony got a key 2-point conversion to make it a two-score game. It totally changed their playcalling at the end.”

The win also gives the Cavaliers a good chance of hosting a first-round Class 5 Region A playoff game. Landstown is in Class 6 Region A.
