Turkoglu, ODU women gain soccer C-USA honors

Old Dominion gained several honors in Conference USA women’s soccer voting.

Ece Turkoglu was named a Co-Freshman of the Year, as well as gaining a spot on the allleague third team and all-freshman squads. Turkoglu, a defensive midfielder, had two goals and three assists for seven points (fifth on the team).

Co-captains Emily Roberts and Talia Tapper garnered All-C-USA second-team accolades.

MEAC honors NSU’s Wheat

In bowling, Norfolk State’s Megan Wheat was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the league announced.

Wheat, a freshman from Hickory High in Chesapeake, finished with a 173.8 pinfall average per game at the Virginia Union Invitation­al, including a high game of 211 as the Spartans picked up five wins on the weekend.

In men’s tennis, for the second straight month, an Old Dominion player was named the Conference USA Athlete of the Month. This time, it was Luca Maldoner for October. Maldoner was the runner-up in the ITA Atlantic Region singles bracket after taking down four consecutiv­e seeded players, earning a spot at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championsh­ips. Last month, Tomislav Podvinski earned C-USA’s honor.

Former ODU assistant Sergey Avdeyev was named the head coach at Texas-San Antonio. He has served as ODU’s associate head coach since 2016.

In women’s tennis, for the second straight time, Yulia Starodubts­eva of the Old Dominion was named the Conference USA Athlete of the Month. She was 8-0 in doubles with Alesya Yakubovich and 4-1 in singles.

In women’s volleyball, Virginia Wesleyan senior Amber Matalus was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Matalus, a middle hitter, registered 47 kills (3.13 per set) over four victories, adding in 12 blocks and attacking at a .379 clip.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NSU freshman on watch list

Norfolk State running back Kevin Johnson was one of 24 players named to the watch list for the Jerry Rice Award, given annually to the top freshman at the FCS level. Johnson is tied for third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with nine total touchdowns.
