Virginia coach Tony Bennett gets a commitment from Trey Murphy, Rice’s leading scorer.

Bringing on another roster element with length and the ability to add depth on the wing might have been a priority for Virginia coach Tony Bennett. He filled that need Monday with the addition of transfer Trey Murphy from Rice.

Murphy, a 6-foot-8 native of Durham, North Carolina, who just finished his sophomore season at Rice, announced his intentions via his Twitter account to transfer to U.Va. As the current NCAA transfer rules dictate, he’ll have to sit out next season, but he has a redshirt available and he’ll have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Last season, he led Rice with 13.7 points per game to go along with 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 43.4% from the floor and 36.8% from 3-point range. As a freshman in the 2018-19 season, he averaged 8.4 points per game off the bench, shooting 42.1% from beyond the 3-point line.

He’ll join a 2020 recruiting class at U.Va. that includes three freshmen: 6-5 wing Jabri AbdurRahim from Blairstown, New Jersey, and 6-2 guard Reece Beekman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana — both of whom are considered by analysts among the top 10 in the nation at their respective positions in the ’20 class — and 6-3 guard Carson McCorkle from Greensboro, North Carolina.

Murphy, who also considered transferring to Houston, Pittsburgh and Villanova, scored at least 20 points last season in five games. He had a careerbest 25 points in November in Rice’s 80-74 win at Northwestern State in Louisiana.
