639 new coronaviru­s cases reported in Va. overnight

The Virginia Department of Health reported 639 coronaviru­s cases Sunday, bringing the state’s tally to 65,748.

Of the total cases, 62,981 are confirmed and 2,767 are probable, meaning they’re symptomati­c and have a known exposure to the illness.

At least 1,853 Virginians have died from the virus, up four from Saturday.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive tests dropped slightly to 6.1% Sunday. Virginia reported 10,068 new tests were performed, bringing the total to 696,520.

The number of people currently hospitaliz­ed is 792, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Associatio­n. Of those, 546 have confirmed cases and 246 are awaiting results. So far, 8,784 COVID-19 patients have been discharged. As of Saturday morning, 21% of the state’s ventilator­s are in use.

Virginia Beach continues to have the highest number of cases in the region with 1,350, up 50 from Saturday, and 30 total deaths. Sunday’s increase is the largest reported daily increase the city has seen. Saturday’s increase of 46 had been the largest increase since June 1, when there were 37 new cases.

Here are the latest numbers for the rest of the region, compared to Saturday. The large number represents the number of cases reported in each locality since the pandemic began.

■ Accomack: 1,044 (up 1); 14 deaths (no change)

■ Norfolk: 1,072 (up 5); 12 deaths (no change)

■ Chesapeake: 1,015 (up 12); 21 deaths (no change)

■ Newport News: 584 (up 16); 10 deaths (no change)

■ Portsmouth: 549 (up 10); 18 deaths (no change)

■ Suffolk: 451 (up 8); 38 deaths (up 1)

■ Hampton: 369 (up 9); 5 deaths (no change)

■ James City: 293 (up 14); 15 deaths (no change)

■ Northampto­n: 272 (up 1); 28 deaths (no change)

■ Isle of Wight: 193 (up 3); 9 deaths (no change)

■ York: 129 (up 5); 3 deaths (no change)

■ Williamsbu­rg: 72 (up 8); 6 deaths (no change)

■ Gloucester: 50 (up 1); 1 death (no change)

■ Poquoson: 19 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Middlesex: 15 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Mathews: 6 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

In Virginia, people older than 80 account for 3,457 cases and 948 deaths. Here’s how the rest of the age groups break down for cases and deaths:

■ 70-79: 3,356 cases, 461 deaths

■ 60-69: 6,450 cases, 267 deaths

■ 50-59: 9,931 cases, 112 deaths

■ 40-49: 11,584 cases, 46 deaths

■ 30-39: 12,149 cases, 13 deaths

■ 20-29: 11,207 cases, 4 deaths

■ 10-19: 4,760 cases, 0 deaths

■ 0-9: 2,217 cases, 0 deaths The VDH did not report ages for 637 cases and two deaths.

■ Virginia Beach: 4.4% (up)

■ Norfolk: 11.8% (up)

■ Chesapeake: 8.4% (up)

■ Portsmouth: 11.7% (up)

■ Eastern Shore: 5.8% (down)

■ Western Tidewater: 4.2% (down)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 33,062 women have had cases and 914 women have died, while 32,246 men have had cases and 929 men have died. Of the state tally, 440 cases don’t have a reported sex and 10 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
