Newport News City Council picks Saundra Cherry as vice mayor
NEWPORT NEWS — The Newport News City Council selected Councilwoman Saundra Cherry as vice mayor at a brief organizational meeting Tuesday.
Councilwoman Tina Vick, who has served as vice mayor the last four years, nominated Cherry, and the council unanimously approved the appointment without much discussion.
The members of the City Council select the vice mayor every two years. The role doesn’t come with much formal authority besides leading or running meetings when the mayor is unavailable. Mayor McKinley Price noted that the selection of vice mayor can sometimes take hours.
Cherry said the council is strong and works well together.
Cherry, an educator at Hampton University, has served on the council since 2014.
The meeting came ahead of a regular council meeting and was the second time the council has met in person since March.
