Virginia reports 938 new virus cases on Sunday, 1 more death

The Virginia Department of Health reported 938 new coronaviru­s cases Sunday, bringing the state’s tally to 119,747.

At least 2,569 Virginians have died from the virus as of Sunday morning, an increase of one from Saturday.

Of the total cases, 114,514 are confirmed and 5,233 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomati­c and have had a known exposure to the illness.

Throughout the state, there have been 9,291 cases in long-term care facilities and 1,337 deaths, according to data from the VDH.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive PCR tests — the common diagnostic test which detects the virus — increased to 7.4%.

Virginia reported 12,707 new PCR tests were performed, increasing the total to 1,568,194.

As many as 1,090 people are hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19, according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Associatio­n.

Of those, 777 have confirmed cases and 313 are awaiting test results. So far, a total of 14,999 COVID-19 patients have been discharged.

Here are the latest numbers for the region compared with Saturday. The larger number represents the number of cases reported in each locality since the pandemic began.

The VDH has occasional­ly reported a decrease in the number of deaths for a locality in the daily reports. When asked about it, a spokesman for the state’s health department said some data may be entered incorrectl­y, or the department will find out later that the patient lived in another city.

■ Newport News: 2,300 (up 27); 24 deaths (no change)

■ Norfolk: 4,361 (up 27); 52 deaths (no change)

■ Northampto­n: 304 (no change); 29 deaths (no change)

■ Poquoson: 67 (up 3); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Portsmouth: 2,213 (up 15); 34 deaths (no change)

■ Suffolk: 1,631 (up 11); 60 deaths (no change)

■ Virginia Beach: 5,985 (up 37); 68 deaths (up 1)

■ Williamsbu­rg: 154 (up 1); 6 deaths (no change)

■ York: 454 (up 3); 5 deaths (no change)

In Virginia, people older than 80 account for 5,261 cases and 1,242 deaths. Here’s how the rest of the age groups break down for cases and deaths:

■ 70-79: 5,846 cases (up 31), 651 deaths (up 1)

■ 60-69: 11,209 cases (up 72), 400 deaths (no change)

■ 50-59: 17,187cases (up 116), 175 deaths (no change)

■ 40-49: 19,362 cases (up 110), 70 deaths (no change)

■ 30-39: 21,543 cases (up 134), 24 deaths (no change)

■ 20-29: 23,825 cases (up 276), 5 deaths (no change)

■ 10-19: 10,037 cases (up 139), 0 deaths (no change)

■ 0-9: 4,342 cases (up 40), 0 deaths (no change). The VDH did not report ages for 1,135 cases and two deaths.

Here are the seven-day percent positivity rates for the health districts around Hampton Roads: ■ Chesapeake: 12.1% (up) ■ Eastern Shore: 1.6% (down)

■ Hampton: 8.5% (down) ■ Norfolk: 8.5% (down) ■ Peninsula: 9.7% (up) ■ Portsmouth: 10.5% (down)

■ Virginia Beach: 5.7% (down)

■ Western Tidewater: 11.8% (down)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 61,419 women have had cases and 1,246 women have died, while 57,605 men have had cases and 1,314 men have died. Of the state tally, 723 cases don’t have a reported sex and nine deaths don’t have a reported sex.
