Cavaliers, Hokies blanked in ACC

-

Host Clemson overcame Virginia 3-0 Sunday in an earlyseason clash of teams predicted fifth and second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the coaches poll.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been no national coaches poll so far this season.

Caroline Conti netted a header in the fourth minute, Courtney Jones scored from Hal Hershfelt's long pass in the 58th, and Megan Bornkamp converted a penalty kick in the 82nd for Clemson (3-0, 2-0) after the Cavaliers (1-1-1, 0-1-1 ACC) were called for a handball in the box.

Meanwhile in Chapel Hill, North Carolina defeated Virginia Tech 1-0, though Hokies freshman goalkeeper Alia Skinner stopped a season-high nine shots.

UNC (2-0, 2-0), last year's national runner-up, scored 14:44 into the game when Brianna Pinto took a pass from Sam Meza in close and chipped a ball just over Skinner. Tech, which was outshot 19-3, fell to 0-3, 0-2.

Tar Heels goalkeeper Claudia Dickey made a diving save to her left of an Emily Gray shot in the 57th minute to preserve the tie.

In the ACC coaches poll, the Tar Heels were predicted fourth and the Hokies seventh. Virginia Tech lost in the NCAA round of 64 last season, while U.Va. and Clemson fell in the round of 32.
