The body of a missing teenage girl from Norfolk was found Wednesday in Newport News, police said in a news release.

Newport News police received a call around 11:15 a.m. about a body near the woodline, close to the 16000 block of Warwick Boulevard, the release said.

Police found 17-year-old Asia Cowell, and medics pronounced her dead.

Cowell was reported missing from Norfolk on Sept. 7. Police tweeted a request for help finding her Sept. 11.

There was no suspect information available as Friday afternoon, and the investigation is ongoing, police said. The Newport News Police Department and the Norfolk Police Department are involved.

“The Norfolk Police Department will continue to stand with Asia's family during this difficult time,” said Norfolk Police Chief Larry Boone in the release. “The Newport News and Norfolk Police Departments will not rest until we determine what happened to Asia. I ask those who may know to yield to the nature of their better angels.”

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said the case is a top priority, and the FBI and other federal organizations have been contacted.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Asia's family and friends,” Drew said. “My heart goes out to them. If anyone knows anything, I ask that you please contact the Newport News Police Department.”
