GOLF Timely 63 gives Carter Mid-Am title

Martinsville’s Blake Carter posted a final-round 63 Sunday to win the 44th Virginia State Mid-Amateur Championship, a 54-hole tournament at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach for players age 25 and older, by four strokes.

Carter, a former Longwood University player who finished at 8-under-par 202, opened the day four shots behind leader Mikey Moyers, who shot 71 Sunday. Dustin Groves (69) was third at 208.

Williamsburg’s Tim Pemberton and Midlothian’s Steve Serrao tied for fourth at 209. Virginia Beach’s Evan Beck was sixth at 210.
