Wise experiences rare touchdown moment

- By Sonny Dearth

For most NFL defensive linemen, scoring a touchdown is but a dream. For New England’s Deatrich Wise Jr., a Suffolk native, it became a reality Sunday afternoon as he capped the Patriots’ second victory in three games.

The fourth-year pro, a former Arkansas Razorback, scooped up the ball on a strip-sack in the end zone with 5:09 left in the fourth quarter to give the Patriots a 23-point lead in their 36-20 home victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Then he said it wasn’t the first touchdown he’d scored.

“Two years ago on Madden,” Wise joked, according to masslive.com before revealing the truth. “This is my first-ever touchdown. Yeah, in any level of game.”

At 6-foot-5, Wise gained weight into the 280s in the offseason, and he’s been a critical part of New England’s success up front.

“He’s played the run game — that’s an area that he really focused on in the offseason and in training camp, and we did as well,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick told masslive.com. “We know he can rush the passer, but he’s done a good job of mixing in edge moves and rush techniques with some power and some more power-type rushes — long arms, things like that.”

In 49 games with New England, including 11 starts, Wise has amassed 89 tackles (13 for loss), 48 quarterback hits and 12 sacks.

His father, Deatrich Wise, coached arenafootball2’s Norfolk Nighthawks in 2000 and ’01 and stayed in Hampton Roads through 2006, including a stint as Norcom High’s head coach, before relocating to Texas.
