Term limits Not so fast

-

Re “Amend Constitution to prevent another Trump” (Nov. 19): Rohit Aggarwala’s opinion piece suggests an interesting approach to a constitutional amendment in order to codify and limit some of the abuses shown by presidents in the past, including the present one.

One past amendment cited was the 22nd, which limited the president to two terms in office. Why not do the same for all federally elected officials? Membership in the House and Senate were never meant to be a career. Actually, in the early years of the country, House and Senate members were paid per diem based on when Congress was actually in session. Many current members of both chambers are walking examples of the need for limits, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and others of the same ilk.

I believe that this would go a long way to ending congressional gridlock and get our elected leaders focused on real issues rather than prioritizing the need to get reelected.

I’ve read all the vitriol condemning President Donald Trump on not conceding the election and their claims of how “President-elect” Joe Biden won the race. First, Biden is not “president-elect” until the

Electoral College certifies the votes. “President-elect” has been projected by the media as such, so I wish people would quit referring to him as “president-elect” until the Electoral College electors cast their votes on Dec. 14. He is Vice President Biden until then.

Second, we have one president until

Jan. 20 and that is Trump, not Biden. People should give him the opportunity to complete his term, and Biden should stand down until then. Yes, I voted for Trump because of the many things he has accomplished during his term, not his personality. While I don’t like his constant tweets and sometimes wish he would tone them down, I feel he has accomplished so much given that the Democratic Party fought him tooth and nail on everything he tried to pass. Imagine howmuchmorehe could’ve accomplished if he didn’t have to keep fighting the Democrats the whole time. And by the way, I voted for former President Barack Obama twice, and I feel I wasted my vote. He made our country more divisive than it ever was.
