Warren nets career high as Pirates cap sweep

-

Russell Dean scored with 1.3 seconds left and Davion Warren smashed his career high with 29 points to lift Hampton University to a 70-68 victory over Charleston Southern on Tuesday night.

Dean’s heroics gave the Pirates (3-4) a two-game sweep on back-to-back nights in the Big South Conference matchup. HU had lost four consecutive games before heading to Charleston Southern.

“It was a definite gut check for us tonight to get a pair of wins on the road,” Hampton coach Buck Joyner said. “This is a great league with strong teams and to get a pair of wins on the road should give us confidence in snapping that losing streak and heading into a tough Gardner-Webb squad.”

Hampton used some defensive pressure in the second half to beat

Charleston Southern 67-55 on Monday, and on Tuesday it was more of the same. The Buccaneers managed just 24.1% shooting from the floor and HU bolted to a 34-18 halftime lead.

Chris Shelton put the Pirates in front by 20 with a 3-pointer with 17 minutes left.

Charleston Southern rallied to close within a point at 59-58 with 4:13 remaining before a tense final few minutes.

Charleston Southern led 62-61 after Phlandrous Flemming Jr.s’ 3-pointer, but Hampton regained the lead on two Davion Warren free throws along with one from Dean and a 3-pointer from Shelton for a 66-62 advantage at the 2:23 mark.

Fleming scored twice to tie it at 68 with 26 seconds left before Dean’s floater in the lane with 1.3 seconds remaining.

Warren finished a career-best 11 of 12 from the foul line and collected eight rebounds. Dean also set career-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds with five assists.

Chris Shelton added nine points on 3-of-6 from behind the arc and Dajour Dickens chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.

Hampton returns home on Dec. 30 to face Gardner-Webb in a two-game set starting at 2 p.m.
