ODU women rally to win opener of series vs. WKU

ODU 55, Western Kentucky 53

NORFOLK — Down by 10 late in the third quarter, Old Dominion (9-10, 6-9 Conference USA) rallied past Western Kentucky (7-14, 6-9) to start a two-game series. The teams will meet again at Chartway Arena at 6:30 tonight in a regular-season finale.

Ajah Wayne and Victoria Morris had 17 points apiece for ODU, and Wayne had 12 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

ODU trailed 45-38 before holding WKU scoreless for more than six minutes, going ahead 49-45. The Monarchs went ahead to stay on Wayne’s layup for a 51-49 edge with 2:40 remaining.

WKU had two chances to tie and one to go ahead in the final seconds, but all of them missed.

ACC tourney, second round Virginia Tech 72, Miami 64

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore had 16 points apiece and Carla King had 15 as the Hokies (14-8) advanced to the ACC quarterfin­als at Greensboro Coliseum and further tightened their strangleho­ld on an NCAA tournament appearance. They will face second-seeded N.C. State in a quarterfin­al.

Earlier in the day, Wake Forest ousted North Carolina 82-71 and Syracuse held off Boston College 67-61.

Pac-12 quarterfin­al

No. 4 Stanford 92, USC 53

LAS VEGAS — Haley Jones had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as the top-seeded Cardinal (23-2) breezed past Southern California (11-12) to reach today’s semifinals. Stanford will play fifth-seeded Oregon State.

BUENA VISTA — Anaya

Simmons’ 24 points guided Christophe­r Newport to its sixth straight victory despite a 39-30 halftime deficit, making the Captains 6-1 in their exhibition season.

Williams-Flournoy out: Auburn ended the tenure of coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, who grew up in Hampton, after nine years. She was 140-138, 48-96 in the Southeaste­rn Conference, with three NCAA tournament appearance­s. The Tigers were 5-19 this season, 0-15 in the SEC, under Williams-Flournoy, the sister of Hampton basketball maven Boo Williams.

Atlantic 10, second round Duquesne 67, Richmond 62

RICHMOND — A Spiders season that began 6-1, including victories against Kentucky and Loyola Chicago, ended at 13-8 as Marcus Weathers recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Dukes at Siegel Center in

the Atlantic 10 tournament. Duquesne (9-8) advanced to face top-seeded St. Bonaventur­e in the first quarterfin­al today.

George Mason 73, George Washington 59

RICHMOND — Jordan Miller’s 19 points and 10 rebounds guided the Patriots (13-8) past the Colonials and into a quarterfin­al against No. 3 seed Davidson.

Atlantic Sun quarterfin­al Liberty 69, Kennesaw State 59

JACKSONVIL­LE, Fla. — Darius McGhee had 16 points, reaching 1,000 for his career, as the top-seeded Flames (21-5) advanced to the semifinals.

Big South semifinal Campbell 78, Radford 60

RADFORD — Joshua Lusane had 14 points and eight rebounds as the third-seeded Camels dominated the second-seeded Highlander­s to advance to the Big South championsh­ip game. Campbell will face top-seeded Winthrop or fifth-seeded Longwood

at noon Sunday with an NCAA tournament berth at stake.

N.C. State 80, Notre Dame 69

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Former Lake Taylor High standout Dereon Seabron, a redshirt freshman, posted season highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds as N.C. State (13-9, 9-8) won its fifth game in a row, its longest ACC victory streak since the 2003-04 season.

Seabron, whose role increased after junior Devon Daniels was injured on Jan. 27, has started the last five games. He shot 8 of 12 from the floor and blocked three shots against the Fighting Irish (9-14, 6-11).

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Justin Moore scored 24 points as the Wildcats captured the Big East title by beating the Bluejays, whose coach, Greg McDermott, is under fire for using language evocative of slavery.

McDermott had apologized for urging his players to “stay on the plantation” in a recent postgame locker room talk. He said on Creighton’s pregame radio show that he offered to resign but that his players wanted him to stay.

Gray added 16 as the Seminoles achieved their 25th straight ACC home win.

Jay Heath scored a career-high 28 for BC (4-14, 2-10).

LAS VEGAS — Matt Mitchell scored 19 points and Jordan Schakel added 16 for San Diego State (20-4, 14-3), which clinched the Mountain West regular-season title for the second straight year.
