Chesapeake women facing multiple charges after traffic stop in stolen vehicle
CHESAPEAKE — Two women are facing charges after police say they drove recklessly Wednesday on Interstate 64 in a stolen vehicle, lied to police about their identities and tried to flee the scene.
A 17-year-old male also was charged with obstruction after the incident, Virginia State Police said in a news release.
About 5 p.m. in Chesapeake, east of the High Rise Bride, a trooper saw a 2013 Ford Fusion driving recklessly and nearly hit another vehicle, the release said.
The trooper checked the vehicle registration and found it had a fake license plate and had been stolen from Pennsylvania.
Police said after first refusing to leave the vehicle, the women fled through the passenger side door and ran down a ditch before being caught by troopers.
The teen was charged with obstruction for “attempting to lay hands on the arresting trooper,” police said.
The driver was later identified as 21-year-old Zaakirah Rasheeda Sherwood Brown, 21, and the woman passenger as Treasu’r Artina Lee, 22.
Two 10-year-old girls in the back seat were released to family members at the scene, police said. The teen was also released to a family member after being charged.
Brown, who police say already was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants in Norfolk, was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, providing false identification, forgery, obstruction, assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen goods, fictitious display of registration, operating a vehicle without a license and reckless driving.
State police charged Lee with providing false identification to a law enforcement officer, obstruction, carrying a concealed firearm without a permit and forgery.
Police said both women are being held without bond.
