Levari, Moore guide ODU to series split

Matt Levari had three hits and two RBIs Sunday as Old Dominion salvaged a split of its fourgame road series against Texas San Antonio, winning 6-2.

The Monarchs (33-18, 19-9 Conference USA), ranked 22nd nationally entering the week, got six innings from winner Ryne Moore (6-1). Kyle Battle led off the game with his 16th home run of the season, tying him for fourth on ODU’s single-season list with former teammate Vinnie Pasquantin­o.

The Roadrunner­s (21-21, 13-14) led 2-1 before the Monarchs went ahead to stay with a three-run fourth and added two in the eighth. Relievers Jason Hartline and Noah Dean combined for three shutout innings for ODU, which will start its final home regular-season series Friday against Wsetern Kentucky.

Saturday, UTSA swept a doublehead­er with victories of 12-10 and then 11-0. In the nightcap, ODU had just two hits off three pitchers. Hunter Gregory (6-2) took the loss, giving up nine runs (seven earned) and 10 hits in 3 ⅔ innings. UTSA’s Griffin Paxton was 3 for 4 with a home run and scored three runs.

Saturday, William & Mary

(12-25, 9-12 CAA) saw its losing streak reach six games with a 5-4 loss in Game 2 of a Senior Day doublehead­er to the College of Charleston. The Cougars (21-18, 11-7) swept the three-game series.

Charleston’s two-run eighth provided a 5-3 lead. Matt McDermott’s RBI single made it 5-4 in the eighth, but W&M went down in order in the ninth. The Tribe will go to James Madison next weekend for a three-game series to finish the regular season. All nine conference teams will compete in the tournament.

Christophe­r Newport

(18-9, 10-5 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference) split a Sunday doublehead­er with St. Mary’s, beating the visiting Seahawks from Maryland 4-0 before losing 4-3.

In Game 1, winner Dylan Weber (5-2) struck out 13 in seven innings, yielding three hits. Danny Checkosky and Jack Rosenberg completed the shutout.

Former Greenbrier Christian standout Conner Clark was 3 for 4, including an RBI bunt single to cap a three-run second inning.

In Game 2, Joey Bryner’s two-run double during a threerun sixth gave St. Mary’s (9-12, 7-8) the lead to stay. Clark and Jonathan Fisher each had two of CNU’s seven hits.
