Cox boys, girls tennis teams top Beach rivals to capture region crowns. Also, high school results.
VIRGINIA BEACH — Playing concurrently on courts about a five-minute drive apart, Cox’s tennis teams hit the region daily double on Tuesday.
Both captured Class 5 Region A team championships against Beach District rivals, earning berths in Monday’s state semifinals against Region B champions from the Richmond area — Deep Run’s boys and Douglas Freeman’s girls. Cox will be the host for both of those matches.
First, the homestanding Cox boys overcame Princess Anne 5-3 as Austin Mo and Neil Vanga came from a set behind to win the clincher at No. 2 doubles after each took their singles matches.
Then, the Cox girls reversed a regular-season loss by winning 5-3 at First Colonial. After a stunning comeback on singles line 4 by Ella Borte, the pair of Brooke Toner and Wilhamina Harris followed singles victories with a clinching doubles triumph on line 3.
Cox’s boys stayed unbeaten as they earned their third consecutive state tournament berth. Coach TJ Jones’ Falcons were the Class 6 runners-up in 2018 and ’19, and after they went down to Class 5, the pandemic scrubbed the 2020 campaign.
Wins in singles by Mo at line 3, Vanga at 4, Christopher Newport recruit Ashton Legum at 2 and James Lonergan at 5 gave the Falcons a 4-1 advantage.
Mo and Vanga rallied past Oen Shikamachi and Paul Sartwell 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 on line 2 for the clincher, leaving No. 1 doubles unfinished.
On the girls side, Cox’s Denise Cooney rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory on line 1, but the Patriots’ Alex Sanda and Waverly Price also registered quick victories to put the hosts ahead 2-1.
Cox, which lost 5-4 to First Colonial in the regular season, wrested control overall by sweeping the three lower-half singles matches.
