Ocean Lakes climbs atop baseball poll

Dolphins end Glen Allen’s 11-game winning streak

Ocean Lakes is the new No. 1 team in Hampton Roads after the Dolphins beat Glen Allen of the Richmond area 5-4 in 10 innings Saturday.

Marcel Whitfield tripled in the bottom of the 10th and scored on Nate Chown’s RBI to help the Dolphins snap the Jaguars’ 11-game winning streak.

Glen Allen (11-1) was No. 10 in the Prep Baseball Report preseason rankings for Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The Dolphins (11-3) have won six games in a row over teams from Virginia, including beating Mills Godwin, which was ranked No. 13 in the preseason poll.

First Colonial is rolling as the Patriots have won 11 games in a row. Their lone loss came in the third game of the season to Princess Anne. They have outscored their opponents 29-3 in their last five games.

Western Branch continues to rise in the rankings. The Bruins have won four in a row since spring break, including victories over ranked teams Grassfield, Hickory and Great Bridge.

Poquoson (10-1) has won eight in row. The Islanders, who have reached 11 state tournament­s and have won three state titles in the past 25 seasons, are trying to win the Bay Rivers District title.

Maury and Granby enter the 757Teamz Top 15. The Commodores have won five in a row to improve to 8-3, while the Comets have won four in a row, including a victory over previously ranked Great Bridge.

No. 8 Menchville plays No. 9 Gloucester twice this week in games that could decide the Peninsula District title.

Here’s a look at the baseball Top 15 — as with all of them, they are based on results reported to The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press before Monday’s games. 7 to No. 3. The Comets (10-2) boast an early win over this week’s No. 2, Grassfield, and impressed last week by beating former No. 1 Hickory 11-3.

Grassfield (10-3) enters the week with nine consecutiv­e victories, five against teams in this week’s top 15.
