Tides rally at Nashville to end skid

Rylan Bannon hit a pair of late RBI singles and Robert Neustrom extended his hitting streak to eight games by going 3 for 5 with two RBIs as the Norfolk Tides rallied past the Nashville Sounds 7-4 on Tuesday night before 5,146 fans at First Horizon Park in Nashville, Tennessee.

In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Tides (13-12) snapped a three-game losing streak and the Sounds (16-8) saw their two-game win streak come to an end.

Norfolk struck first with two runs in the second on RBI singles by Patrick Dorrian and Ryan McKenna. Nashville got a run back in the bottom of the second on Jonathan Davis’ sacrifice fly and took a 4-2 lead in the third on David Dahl’s RBI double and Weston Wilson’s two-run single.

The Tides trimmed their deficit to 4-3 in the sixth on Neustrom’s RBI single. In the eighth, Bannon tied it with a run-scoring single and Dorrian’s RBI single put Norfolk ahead to stay at 5-4. Dorrian finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Neustrom added an RBI double and Bannon followed with an RBI single for two insurance runs in the ninth. Neustrom is hitting .452 with two homers, seven RBIs and four stolen bases during his hitting streak.

Matt Vogel (1-0), the fourth Tides pitcher, picked up the victory by pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Starter Blaine Knight gave up all four of Nashville’s runs in three innings. Relievers Tim Naughton, Mike Baumann, Vogel, Nick Vespi and Cole Uvila combined for six scoreless innings, giving up a combined two hits. Uvila pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

Sounds reliever Jason Alexander (3-2) gave up three runs in 4.2 innings.

The two teams played Wednesday night and are set to play at 7:35 p.m. today.
