Re “Diversity, inclusion” (Your Views, April 27): Bryan Sullivan, of Virginia Beach, in his letter to the editor missed the mark. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development is meaningless: Its sole focus is not on education. StudentsFirstVA.com shows that it honors Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings. Malcolm X spoke about “white liberals.” Students First VA doesn’t appear to be made up of liberals, although Sullivan appears to be.
Tell me what academic subjects any student will not be able to achieve at if critical race theory; social and emotional learning; or Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning programs are not taught to them?
Tell me about the “social contract” because kids are not coming out with the academic background that they used to years ago. Why is that? Too much garbage, and not enough academics.
There is school violence. Why is that? Because of teaching hatred and division, not unity and inclusion as King did.
Specifically give us examples that show the people supporting Students First VA are “fermenting an environment” making “schools less safe.” How does teaching what King stood and died for, nonviolence, honest, respectable character, specifically do that?
The last paragraph can’t be addressed because it is so full of supposition and baseless conjecture it doesn’t deserve attention. Maybe Sullivan can disclose his being the treasurer of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee. If you are going to claim political agendas of groups, disclosing your own first would have been more appropriate.
