Katherine Prassas Protogyrou, 58, passed away on June 8, 2022 in Norfolk, VA. She was born in Williamsburg, VA to John and Alexa Prassas.

She attended James Madison University and received a B.A. in Business in 1987. She spent over 20 years, working side by side with her husband, at Protogyrou P.L.C.

She was predeceased by her mother Alexa Prassas.

She is survived by her husband, Andy Protogyrou; children, Tony (his friend Katie) and Demetra (fiancé Jon); sisters, Joanne Prassas, Maria Williams (Joe), and brother George Prassas (Rita) and their children Alexis, Chrysanthe and Yianni.

She was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Norfolk, VA, where she was a member of the Hellenic Women’s Club. She was a dedicated member to the Circle on the Point, Harbor Front Garden Club and the CHKD Board of Directors. A voracious reader, known to read every spare moment, she enjoyed her book club friends and their get togethers.

She was a proud mother; she was a partner in life, business and companion wife to her husband; law firm financial controller; cat lady – but not in a crazy way; mentor; muse; critic; teacher; an observer and commenter on people, politics and our city; dinner companion; colleague; a giver of at least one warning when faced by stupidity; landlady and rent collector; smart; wise; dependable; a coordinator; a friend; the glue that held so much together for so many people, places and things.

Kathy was a force of nature, like the weather – always there. God help those unknowing souls who took her, like they do the weather, for granted. She was naturally elegant. She could be the gentle wind that lifts you to greater heights or the storm that renders you helpless. She had a nice smile and a good laugh. She was kind. She was good.

God works in mysterious ways. He took away from us a gem. Kathy’s death that came without warning is not only a loss to we who knew her,

but a loss to those who had yet to experience her grace and generosity, and who will never have that opportunity.

A Trisagion service will be held at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 4:00pm. The funeral will be held on Monday, June 13, 2022 at 11:00am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Granby St. Interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to CHKD, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Norfolk Collegiate School, or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank the many friends who have reached out to them in this difficult time, with special thanks to the Honorable Robert Rigney, Mike Koceja, and Jennifer Sanford.
