FC, Lafayette, Poquoson girls join Tabb boys in soccer title games
GIRLS SOCCER Class 5 semifinals
First Colonial 3, Deep Run 0: The defending state champion Patriots scored two first-half goals Friday in their 15th consecutive game without a loss.
First Colonial (18-1-1) has outscored its region and state tournament opponents 31-1.
First Colonial will play Briar Woods, of Ashburn, in today’s state championship game at Briar Woods at noon.
Class 3 semifinals
Lafayette 4, Lord Botetourt 1: Brooke Potter scored her 37th and 38th goals of the season and Lexi King added another goal as the Rams (17-2) secured a spot in the program’s first state championship game.
Taylor Walker added the third goal. Potter, who got ample help up front from King and Posey Troy, added the fourth to make it 4-1. The Rams will play for the state title at 12:30 p.m. today at Courtland.
Class 2 semifinals
Poquoson 2, Alleghany 1: Kayla Romine scored the game-winner for the Islanders with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left in the second overtime, putting Poquoson in its first girls soccer state championship game with a win in Salem.
Goalkeeper Sydney McCarthy saved a penalty kick by the Mountaineers (20-2-2).
“That save changed the game,” coach Jeff Imgrund said. “It gave Sydney confidence and it gave us momentum.”
Class 4 semifinals
Tuscarora 1, Smithfield 0: Smithfield’s first trip to a Class 4 girls soccer state semifinal ended in a loss to Tuscarora at Riverbend High on Friday, but Nathan Jones did not consider the result a failure. Instead, the Packers’ secondyear coach saw the close result as a sign of better things to come.
“No one thought we had a chance, but the girls laid their hearts on the field and gave it their all,” Jones said.
BASEBALL Class 3 semifinals
Liberty Christian Academy 12, Lafayette 1: The Rams’ loss at Spotsylvania High marked the final outing for one of the most successful senior classes in program history.
Kevin Cole, Luke Hanson, Blake Townsend and Price Whitaker were all part of the Rams team that earned the second state title in program history with a dramatic 9-8 win over Riverside in the 2019 Class 4 final. After losing the 2020 season to COVID19,
they helped lead the Rams to consecutive Class 3 semifinals.
The end came quickly on Friday as LCA struck for nine runs in the second inning.
BOYS SOCCER Class 3 semifinals
Tabb 2, Charlottesville 1: Following Tabb’s loss in the Class 3 boys soccer state semifinals a year ago, longtime coach Scott Kuhnle suggested his players “remember this feeling,” so they would work to redeem it.
The Tigers did just that on Friday, rallying to beat Charlottesville 2-1 at Courtland High in a semifinal. The Tigers 18-1 will vie for a first state title since 1997 at 10 a.m. today on Courtland’s field.
Charlottesville (17-3-2) took the lead eight minutes in on Xavier Trager’s goal. Garrett Aunapu’s tying first-half goal and Austin Robertson’s second-half penalty kick propelled the Tigers.
SOFTBALL Class 3 semifinals
New Kent 2, Fort Defiance 0: Morgan Berg tossed a one-hitter, striking out six, and Alline Alexander and Jess Taggart had two hits to lead the Trojans (23-1) into today’s 11 a.m. championship game against Lord Botetourt at Spotsylvania High.
