Tides earn series victory before heading south

After beating Gwinnett, Norfolk facing Jumbo Shrimp in Jacksonville

- Staff reports

The Norfolk Tides erased a three-run deficit and beat Gwinnett 6-3 Sunday night before 7,328 fans got to see a fireworks extravaganza at Harbor Park.

Kyle Stowers had three hits for the Tides (38-40), who closed the six-game series with four victories before heading to Jacksonville for another six-game International League series. Norfolk faced the Jumbo Shrimp in Florida on Monday night but is off today.

Tides starter Bruce Zimmermann,

a Maryland native who began his career in the Atlanta organization, yielded three first-inning runs to the Stripers (37-41) but finished seven innings without yielding another. He scattered eight hits, walked none and struck out six.

Yusniel Diaz began the comeback with a two-run homer in the second off Tucker Davidson, who started Game 5 of last year's World Series for Atlanta. In the fourth, Jacob Nottingham's home run tied the score, and Jordan Westburg doubled home Anthony Bemboom with the go-ahead run.

Davidson struck out nine in five innings but yielded seven hits and two walks, taking the loss.

Stowers slugged a home run in the seventh, and Gunnar Henderson singled home Cadyn Grenier in the eighth.

Kevin Smith pitched the last two innings for his second save of the year.
