Norfolk State women rise to 11-3

Norfolk State’s women controlled the fourth quarter of a defensive struggle Friday for a 42-38 victory at UNC Wilmington, improving the Spartans to 11-3.

Kierra Wheeler had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans, who trailed 30-24 after three periods. They went ahead to stay, 38-36, on a Niya Fields 3-pointer with 3:03 to go. Deja Francis and Camille Downs scored NSU’s last two baskets, and the Spartans held UNCW (3-8) scoreless for the last 2:15.

The 80 combined points tied for the lowest total in NSU history. It was the first time ever NSU won while scoring 42 or fewer points.

Carrie Gross led the Seahawks with 12 points, and Micah Hoggatt had six points and 10 rebounds.

No. 3 Stanford 90, California 69: Haley Jones hit her initial

six shots and scored 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting to go with 10 rebounds and four assists for the host Cardinal (13-1) against the Bears (9-3) in the Pac-12 opener for both schools. Stanford’s Hannah Jump knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to 17 points. Jayda Curry scored 20 points for Cal.

Men George Mason 91, Coppin State 53:

Victor Bailey Jr. scored 17 points to lead five GMU players in double figures as the Patriots (8-5) routed the Eagles (5-10) in Fairfax to improve to 7-0 at home.

Bouncing back from Wednesday’s 78-77 loss at Old Dominion, George Mason went ahead 9-0 and 18-2, yielding just one basket in almost the first seven minutes.

De’Von Cooper and Devin Dinkins had 15 points apiece, Ginika Ojiako had 13 and Josh Oduro had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Sam Sessoms scored 17 for Coppin State, but the Eagles were 3 for 20 from 3-point range.

Thursday ACC N.C. State 76, Louisville 64:

Former Virginia Cavalier Casey Morsell scored 15 points from five 3-pointers as the Wolfpack won in Raleigh. D.J. Burns Jr. had 17 points for N.C. State (11-3, 1-2 ACC), which pulled away early in the second half for its third straight win.

Terquavion Smith made three 3-pointers, Morsell added two more and Jack Clark converted a three-point play during a 20-2 run that gave N.C. State a 53-35 lead with 13:05 remaining. Louisville pulled within 10 points twice inside the final two minutes but didn’t get closer. Sydney Curry had 16 points for the Cardinals (2-11, 0-3).

MORE REGION/STATE Washington State 66, George Washington 64:

Jabe Mullins hit a 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left to give the Cougars (5-6) a victory over the Colonials (6-5) in the Diamond Head Classic first round in Honolulu.

Mouhamed Gueye, who led WSU with 21 points and 10 rebounds, scored on a putback layup with 24 seconds to go that tied it at 63. E.J. Clark then made the first of two free throws to give

GW a one-point lead.

On the ensuing possession, TJ Bamba scooped up a loose ball near the 3-point arc and passed to Mullins for an unconteste­d game-winner. That advanced the Cougars to a Friday semifinal against tournament host Hawaii.

Brendan Adams scored 17 points for GW, which was to face Pepperdine on Friday in consolatio­n play.

TOP 25 Missouri 93, No. 16 Illinois 71:

Kobe Brown set career highs with 31 points and eight assists, and D’Moi Hodge added 20 points for the Tigers (11-1) against the Illini (8-4) in the “Braggin’ Rights” game in St. Louis.

Brown’s 31 points were the most in Missouri history against Illinois.

Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 22 points and Matthew Mayer added 16 for Illinois, which has dropped two of three since upsetting then-No. 2 Texas on Dec. 6 at Madison Square Garden.

DeAndre Gholston added 15 points and Ronnie DeGray III scored 10 for Missouri.

No. 4 Kansas 68, Harvard 54:

Jalen Wilson scored 21 points as the Jayhawks (11-1) stayed undefeated at home.

Kansas went 4 for 20 from behind the arc, with no player besides Gradey Dick hitting one until Wilson made one with just more than a minute remaining. Wilson scored 11 points in the final 6:24.

Chris Ledlum had 17 points for Harvard (8-5).

No. 5 Arizona 93, Morgan State 68: Azuolas Tubelis scored 26 points, Oumar Ballo added 21 and Arizona closed out its nonconfere­nce schedule with a victory in Tucson.

Arizona (12-1) shot 58% and had 25 assists on 34 field goals to stretch the nation’s third-longest active home winning streak to 27 games. Tubelis finished 9 for 10 from the floor and Ballo was 8 for 8.

Malik Miller scored 23 and Isaiah Burke 22 for Morgan State (4-8), which was blown out despite shooting 12 of 23 from behind the 3-point arc.
