-

Jean Savedge Stewart, 82 passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday March 1, 2023. Born June 22, 1940, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Luray Virginia Savedge. She was also predeceased by her brother James Everette Savedge.

She is survived by the husband of 56 years, John Shelton Stewart, III; daughter Jennifer S. Gwaltney (Charles); two grandsons, Joseph S. Gwaltney (Rebecca, loving caretaker in her last days), and Randall A. Gwaltney; two great-granddaughters, Abigail Lynn Gwaltney and Alisa Starr Lunsford. Jean was a hardworking, loyal and faithful lover of her family immediate and extended. She was retired from BB&T Bank in Surry Va. after 40 years. Jean was a lifelong member and trustee of New Lebanon Christian Church, a member of Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad Aux. for over 40 years. Sharing her love of local history, she enjoyed being a member of Dendron Historical Society and volunteering her time to work at the Surry Historical Society. She also was an active member of Dendron Volunteer Fire Department. Originally joining in 1980, as one of the first female members, she served as an EMT to provide her services to the firefighters. She continued her service in the department up until her passing as Secretary and Treasurer. She loved all ‘her firefighters” as she called them from all Departments in Surry County, and they all fondly referred to her as “Mama Jean”. As an avid volunteer for so many organizations, she loved and enjoyed all her times spent with each and valued all the friends and even strangers she came to know through her volunteering.

Her other enjoyments came from spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to gather with family and friends every chance she got, she dearly loved them all. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 2 PM in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Union Christian Church Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Dendron Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 155, Dendron, VA, 23839.
